Has anyone used Dermablend (or similar) for scars? How the f do I find my skin tone?

I have scarring of sad origin that I need to cover up, but my shade changes like all the time. The scarring is on my inner arm, which is kind of light but fades to a darker tone around to the top of my arm. Any people of color here use scar covering makeup and can help me decide what shade to get? I can't really trust photos off a monitor. And my tone looks different based on the light I'm under.

I can't help you with that specifically. But I can tell you that I come from a similar place when it comes to scars. The only over the counter treatment I know of is applications of vitamin E. Which, if you're like me and tend to do things in excess, might not be enough to help if the scarring is too much.

If you have a doctor to talk to, you might be able to find some techniques covered by insurance. Otherwise, it can be a bit of a pricey experience with likely mixed results.

I don't do any of these things and I know that is no help to you at all. Especially since I don't live with my scars because I've learned to be strong, or stoic, or found some valuable lesson in the child I was compared to the adult I now am. But because I'm really just that lazy.

For what it's worth, my heart goes out to you.

Thanks for your post, the scarring is extremely deep (had to be stitched) and has keloided, unfortunately. Maybe laser or something, but I was hoping to at least cover it up so i can wear short sleeves :/

I'm only familiar with acne scars, but I used camouflage fx which was purchased at Sephora. It wasn't an exact match, but it was okay when mixed with a liquid foundation. There are colored foundation that neutralizes the color of the blemish and makes it nearly undetectable under foundation. I never got around to using that stuff though.

Have you looked into permanent fixes such as laser scar removals or topical creams such as kojic acid or hydroquinone?

I'm sorry you went through that and hope you are at a better place.

I use a lactic acid/kojic acid peel for my face, acne n all. So sometimes I dab a bit on the scars, it hurts too much to do it a lot though.

Depending on how old the scar is have you considered silicone gel sheets? It's used for burn patients with keloid and hypertrophic scarring. Look up the results it's amazing but it takes months.

As someone with similar scars covering my body, though mine are smaller and have never required stitches, they do get darker or lighter depending on the scar type. I use ambi fade cream on the dark scars but haven't figured out much for the light. Other than blending with makeup and making people notice my face before my body.

Have you considered seeing a dermatologist? They may be able to do dermabrasion on you. But that's also a difficult procedure for dark skin. Most of all remember that your scars don't make you any less of a bright or capable human being.
