Aired vs. DVD Orders, Reliably Grabbing Cartoon Series is Brutal

discussion

Yeah, it's been talked about to death. I'm going to talk about it again. Grabbing and organizing cartoon series without being able to choose between TVDB's Aired and DVD orders makes it a brutal experience. Pretty much every cartoon series I've come across uses DVD ordering when numbering episodes, so Sonarr absolutely massacres grabbing those due to solely relying on the Aired order. It impacts an entire genre of television show.

But everyone already knows this. Adding a Series Order drop-down menu in the Edit window would be sufficient.

I'm dealing with this tonight and it's so annoying I'm actually posting about it.

Let's end on a high note... Adding custom formats in v4 is a huge win, so thanks for that.

While we're venting, kids shows that are 2-3 episodes per episode are really frustrating too. I'm looking at you Daniel Tiger and Paw Patrol.

A lot of 90s nickelodeon shows are that way, too. If you let it do its own thing, you'll often, at minimum, get every second half-timeslot episode duplicated, and sometimes ALL of them are duplicated.

So like:

  • 1,2

  • 2

  • 3,4

  • 4

Etc

Gah

Funny enough, I‘m pretty sure DVD order would solve this stupid issue, too.

Just absolute insanity.

Never had an issue with sonarr understanding what is up, but Plex doesn’t skip the second episode, and then little ones get upset

American Dad has this problem. It’s a shit show. But I don’t think the “order” is really the problem. It’s more an issue of seasons being labeled differently by different providers.

Futurama was a nightmare

Yep- and the kids shows have 100million episodes per season. It is suuuper painful.

Paw Patrol Bluey Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Spider-Man (1990s) Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles (1989)

All manual, every…episode… …and if you aren’t careful Sonarr will try to rename/organize the seasons like it wants (out of order) after I spent hours renaming and organizing 🫠

It's tough because there's zero consistency between sources (DVD, TV, streaming). It's a nightmare, and I typically have to manually match every single episode if I want to know that they're correct.

Whereas if you had an option to look at TVDB, figure out which ordering is being used, then update the Sonarr series to match that ordering through a drop-down menu, the whole problem is solved. Instead of manually matching files which is an enormous pain in the ass.

I usually just grab the whole season/series separately from Sonarr and rename the files or make lossless cuts manually.

However, if the shows you’re talking about are currently airing, you’re bound to get “E01 is actually E01-E02” errors.
