Diy hotswap Backplane enclosure

Question/Advice

Hi, I'm currently building my own nas server and i am deciding on a case plan, I have looked everywhere for a case with 5x 5.25 slots on the front but they seem scarce so i thought, hey why not build my own 5.25 enclosure. I will be housing 2 CMR-3141SAS in it and then storing that on top of a flat lying case with the power and sata going into the main nas case. Is this a stupid idea? and if so what are other recommendations. Thanks

Odd can get 5 and 12 external 5.25 bay cases from newegg for 250 ish.

For the price why not just get a sas disks shelf? Quick look and you can pick up a 12 lff bay for well under 200 delivered. Redundant power and a sas expander.

I totally would but i have a limited amount of space to work with so a rack mounted case is out of the question

I needed a big 5.25" case recently and the only one I could find (in stock anywhere) was this:

Rosewill THOR (6x front 5.25).

The only thing I hate about it is the giant fan on the access panel door, otherwise, its a perfectly serviceable case.

Unfortunately it is not available in Europe

I have the Phanteks Enthoo Primo and I absolutely love the case, and it has five 5.25 ODD bays that you can buy hotswappable hard drive mounts for, it also has an additional six 3.5 hdd cages right below the ODD bay. And it also has room for a total of six additional 2.5 ssd/hdd drives, which a 2.5 hdd/ssd cage can hold two 2.5 inch drives each. The case comes with two 2.5 hdd/ssd cages, and you can buy the last remaining 2.5 cage online if you ever felt like it. :)

You can use a "5-in-3" hot swap cage (5 HDD in 3 5.25 bays) so you only need 3x 5.25 to get started. Reuse the cage on future builds/bigger cases.

Are those the usb ones, with their own external power brick?
