I usually go to my system tray and click iCloud icon then on the pop up click download photos…then check the box for all photos and then click download.
That button doesn't exist for me, and according to this article, "This method may no longer work"
edit: Never mind, i got the button to appear by enabling this option in icloud's in-app settings, which imo, barely conveys that it allows access to other device's photos on pc. Apple really seems to give its windows software the step-son treatment. Ah well, thank you for pointing me in the right direction, i had already given up on that until you rekindled the thought

I had to install iCloud for windows to download over 10k of them. Was still a pain in the ass
It’s easier to export from Photos, presuming you use the OSX version of photos and not just the iOS one on your phone
will this download the original hi-res versions from iCloud? even if originals aren't saved on your computer?

Yes, you can easily drag your mouse to select photo's.
