I need to unzip a RAR file on iMac

Mac

Hi - I have a 6 gig RAR file to unzip. I downloaded an app that seems perfect from App Store . But when I want to install it there are about 3 or 4 permission prompts it requests . Access to folders and such . I am apprehensive about installing it because of possible viruses. Am I just paranoid? Are these kinds of apps safe to install? Google has a online extraction app you don’t download but the file is too big .

Please advise me on security concerns with these kind of unzip apps .

As u/Time_Doctor already said, go for The Unarchiver. But I also wanted to encourage you to think critically about things like this.

  • You downloaded an app from Apple's App Store, where there are humans reviewing every submission for privacy threats. There's also a privacy report on each app's page that shows what data each developer collects. Sometimes bad things slip through, yes, but overall, this is where Apple has earned its reputation as a safe marketplace for software.

  • The app you downloaded takes zipped files and folders and unzips them into new, uncompressed files and folders, and asked permission to do so.

  • The alternative you mentioned (online decompression) would be to send your file over the internet to a server that has no such privacy reports and doesn't have to disclose all of what they're doing with your data while they have it. That could range anywhere from absolutely nothing all the way up to building a dossier on you specifically and emailing it to [insert evil political overlord of your choice] on his birthday every year.

You were headed down the right path, and the app you downloaded will probably work just fine for what you're trying to do, no need to be afraid of it asking for permission. I promise I'm not trying to mock you or shame you or anything, I just want you to direct the caution you rightly have in the right way.

Thanks so much for this comment. I even went to apple care and they were walking me through- but I complained it was “3rd party” and I didn’t complete with them !!!! I am simply paranoid. I just panic when I see “install” but I hit YES and then it says “are you sure?” —— and I’m thinking 🤔 well no I’m not “sure”

Ok - I’m going to do it !

Thanks for your help with my paranoia. It’s a DAW software I medic to unzip.

I’m just super careful with all the hacking you hear about!

Even apple care told me to use 3rd party - but I wouldn’t.

Why do you think Apple doesn’t make one ??

A pirate that's worried about downloading from the MAS, but not about what they pirated.

Well, that's new, I suppose.

It’s not pirate stuff. It is audio DAW software purchased . Authorized with a dongle
