Setting up Private DERP server
Help Needed
Hi everyone,
What is the latest (and simplest) best practice regarding setting up a private DERP server. (Guides, containers, etc)
Around the afternoon i experience to slow connection with the Tailscale DERP servers.
Also, what is the best practice in terms of placement of this server?

On my local network?

On a VPS?
I have done some research already so i know the principles, the guides I found where relatively old...

I setup a private DERP server as well, but, my major issue is that I rarely use it.
My private DERP server is around 4-5ms away and the nearest public DERP server is like 3-4ms away.
Both of those are close enough that latency is a non-issue, but, the speeds via the public DERP server are terribly poor.
I tried adjusting the weighting of different regions and disabling specific regions look here but disabling my nearest region causes all of my nodes to go offline (and sometimes needs a tailscale restart to recover them, which is REALLY painful) and adjusting the region score seems to do nothing.

How are you testing your speeds?
Did you open the port needed for tailscale?
What cloud provider are you using? (what are the specs for your cloud instance you picked?)
Are you sure you're using your DERP server? check with

Any other resources you know of? That tutorial is garbage. Lots of stuff poorly explained and stuff missing. My autistic cousin could write a better tutorial than that.
