First timer, final 6.12 release or 7.0?

Hello,

I am repurposing a secondary gaming PC to an server. This is my first time using unRAID and or any other nas/server OS. I have worked with mainly windows and Mac OS prior. Would you suggest sticking with the final 6.12 release or moving directly to the 7.0 now out? I use all the classic guides and youtube as my resources and don't want to struggle to much out the gate trying to translate to the 7.0 release.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

I built my first unraid server over the weekend.  I went straight to 7 rc2.  I bought an ARC a310 card for transcoding and wanted to use it.  No issues with it so far other than my initial file copy took what felt like forever.

Good reason to go straight to 7 if you wanted the Arc support. I did the same too

I'm running one 7.0.0-rc.2 test server and one 6.12.14 server. I must say that the tailscale inclusion into 7.0.0 feels pretty big in terms of secure self hosting of services. I wouldn't bother with a number of older/alternative methods of securing unraid services unless I were considering offering them publicly. I don't think there's enough else different that you'd have issues with videos from SpaceInvaderOne or similar videos, any more than changes within v6.x. I wouldn't recommend running a release candidate as "production", but if you're initially just playing and investigating then go with 7.0.0.

I built my first unraid a couple weeks ago. Went with 6.12 at the recommendations of several others. Happy I did so. I’ll wait for the release of 7.0 before I upgrade.

I mean how would you know if it was good decision?

7 has completed the beta phase and is a release candidate now. For a brand new system, I'd go with 7.

If a new system is set up, use 7.0.0.rc2. I am using it since beta 3, no problems so far.

Go with 6.12 to be sure that everything is working fine, and then you can upgrade to 7 if you want.

I got in at 6.10 and highly recommend 7.0 for newbies. Like others said, Tailscale docker implementation is a godsend and it makes most methods of exposing services feel antiquated and overly complicated. On top of that, the fact that you don’t need an array, better/fixed NFS support, and updated YouTube tutorials for beginners make me wish I could feel the Unraid freshness again at 7.0! You can’t go wrong either way but if you want to get up and running faster, my humble opinion is 7.0 - most of the hesitant ones are us oldies who are afraid of previously-working stuff breaking. You should be fine if starting fresh!

Thank you all for the quick, insightful info. This community has been so great to dive into, in prep for this project.

Just created a 7.0.0-RC.2 boot USB. Now just waiting on the Jonsbo N5 that will house it all, currently out for delivery!

Cheers and happy holidays.
