The reply means the target host is unreachable which is not an error and can happen using a plain 'ping' as well. Now, using the -f(lood) option, some firewalls or hosts can believe it's a DoS attack and drop the icmp packets silently. Do you really need this -f option ? It can overflow the network and should be avoided as much as possible. Now, some hosts don't reply to icmp at all (for security reasons). Try a simple 'ping URL' to see what happens. There is no difference between ping and ping -f packets, only the emission rate. If the plain ping don't work, the ping -f will certainly not. You can try a port scan as well. – (/users/4499065/pyrophorus) (289 reputation) Pyrophorus Commented (2015-03-04 10:12:28Z, License: CC BY-SA 3.0) Mar 4, 2015 at 10:12 (this comment was edited 1 time) When I tried ping -f 54.206.125.84, it shows Operation not permitted – (/users/9355534/shark-deng) (1,088 reputation) Shark Deng Commented (2020-05-25 23:01:54Z, License: CC BY-SA 4.0) May 25, 2020 at 23:01 Try 'sudo ping -f 54.206.125.84' as the OP does. In my case, I want to ping another connected device in the same network (for wireless debugging purpose using adb ) but returning "Request timeout for icmp_seq" in the mac terminal. So if you encounter this problem only in your own home / private network, continue reading this answer, because I experienced this issue on my own wifi network. I found this solution with configuring my wifi router (ZTE Router) below. In browser go to (http://192.168.1.1) http://192.168.1.1 (router config dashboard) Enter router username & password Check the connected device status (local network > status > wlan client status). In this case, my phone connected to SSID1 and my mac connected to SSID5, so cannot ping each others (https://i.sstatic.net/FyhgsQUV.png) (wlan client status) To solve this, go to SSID configuration (local network > wlan > wlan ssid configuration) In the configuration I found that SSID1 using 2.4Ghz and SSID5 using 5Ghz, maybe the this is the root cause, so I turned off all SSIDs and leave only SSID1 active (https://i.sstatic.net/CVkWUCrk.png) (ssid config) Solved, ping success & wireless debugging using adb connect success (/a/78809952) (Short permalink to this answer) Share Share a link to this answer Copy link (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) (The current license for this post: CC BY-SA 4.0) CC BY-SA 4.0 (/posts/78809952/edit) () Improve this answer Follow (70:3:31e,16:86f8ee39d11c9917,10:1744710004,16:2ad2e2c030be8089,8:78809952,602fb1bb37e039cc2c5a934811b99595a1c991aaa5f2db6df623c2a0dd7d0ac2) Follow this answer to receive notifications answered (2024-07-30 05:43:42Z) Jul 30, 2024 at 5:43 (/users/6193799/adan) (Adan's user avatar) (/users/6193799/adan) Adan Adan (reputation score) 636 (5 silver badges) 5 5 silver badges (15 bronze badges) 15 15 bronze badges (Use comments to ask for more information or suggest improvements.
