htpasswd for openwrt?

I want to use htpasswd to generate a passwd to use for authentication with squid proxy, but I can't install it with opkg. I've generated the passwd file on a separate debian box, and copied the contents to my openwrt, but it is just not working. For testing, I used "password" as a password, and I can't authenticate myself. Any ideas?
