Thunderbolt 4 dock with 4k@120hz? (with DisplayPort 1.4)
Hi. I just got a Samsung CRG9 to use with my M1 Max Macbook Pro 2021.
I also bought a Thunderbolt 3/4 to Displayport 1.4 cable from Uni which can handle up to 8k@60 or 4k@120

and if I plug this cable directly into my MacBook pro and into the monitor. I can get 5120x1440 resolution at 120hz (almost the same amount of pixels as a normal 16:9 4k display)
However, if I use my existing dock (which is only Thunderbolt 3) I can only get 5120x1440 at 60hz.
I'm trying to find a dock that can handle 4k@120hz via a thunderbolt to display port 1.4 cable.
All the most known docks seem to be limited to a single monitor at 4k@120.

I thought part of the thunderbolt 4 spec was that it should handle displayport 1.4 (which means it should be able to run at least 1 monitor at 4k@120hz?)
Or does that just not exist yet and I have to plug my monitor directly into my laptop every time?
My wife has virtually the same setup (CRG9 with the 13" M1 MBP). She has her Macbook successfully running at 5120x1440 120Hz through the CalDigit TS3 Plus using a USB-C to DP cable. Technically DisplayPort 1.2 has sufficient bandwidth to output 5k 60Hz, which is exactly double the vertical pixel count of the CRG9 at half the refresh rate. This is however not uncompressed RGB, and displays at 4:2:2 chroma subsampling.
If you look for any dock that advertises itself as 5k capable it should fit the bill (this would indicate that it is DP 1.4). Looking at the M1 compatibility page on CalDigit's website they indicate two docks that can do a minimum of 1x 5k60 - the TS3 Plus and the TB4 Element hub.
a lil bit late to the convo, but do you mind sharing if the MBP connects to the peripherals that are connected to the CRG9? Thinking of running the same setup, but without a dock.
Is the usb c to dp cable connected to the dock or to the second port of the MacBook?

Thunderbolt 3 have 2 different variant. Titan ridge and Alpine ridge. Titan ridge is the only one support DP1.4. Most recent Titan Ridge dock supports it except a few such as the one from Plugable, which they hard limit the bandwidth to half. Practically any TB4 dock will support 4K120hz, since they all come from the same reference design. I have used Kensington TB4 docks and it works, which have the same exact design as Razer, just different shell. I did find an odd issue where my screen occasionally just randomly turn black on my 4K120hz monitor when going through thunderbolt, but not my other 4K60hz. Not sure if it’s firmware issue or some sort of interference on high bandwidth.

I needed to connect my M1 Max Macbook Pro and my Windows desktop to my dual monitor setup with support for 4K HDR at 120Hz and this was exactly what I was looking for!

I have nearly the same config as you (same KVM, except only 1 4k 120hz monitor), and I have issues with the signal on macOS. Constantly dropping out, fuzzing, display not receiving signal at all. Have you experienced any of the same?

To my surprise I just got my LG 27GN950 running at 4K 120HZ through the TB passthrough of an old Elgato TB3 dock I got for $40. It did require an M1 MBA though - my 2019 MBP 16" could only do 60HZ through it. I did also have to update the monitor's firmware to be able to disable DSC - with it on, even the M1 could only do 95HZ.
The 6-year old TB chipset (Alpine Ridge) the dock is built around is only supposed to support passing through DP 1.2 speeds regardless of host capabilities, but it seems M1 keeps delivering miracles even to this day :)
Will this dock targus 190EUZ to get 120hz for 1440p ?
