M1 Pro dock for 4K120hz on HDMI2.1?
Hey y'all.
I have a 2021 M1 Pro MBP 16". I was hoping to hook it up to my LG 42C2 at 4K120hz via a charging dock.
Are there any TB4 docks or setups out there today that would support this? Would the CalDigit dock + CableMatters USB-C -> HDMI2.1 adapter together solve for this?
Any alternatives or suggestions? TIA!

Its possible checkout the macrumors thread where they have working adapters. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/dp-usb-c-thunderbolt-3-4-to-hdmi-2-1-4k-120hz-rgb4-4-4-10b-hdr-with-apple-silicon-m1-m2-now-possible.2381664/
Awesome, thank you! i was wondering more so about using an adapter WITH a dock. I guess the dock as a passthrough would be immaterial then as long as you use the adapter?
Hi, I'm the CalDigit Community Manager. There's unfortunately no way to pull this off with your current setup. M1 and M2 computers can only support up to HDMI 2.0b over Thunderbolt connections. Even with an HDMI 2.1 adapter, the HDMI specification is going to drop down to 2.0b at most.
Thunderbolt and USB4 know nothing of HDMI. Any HDMI port uses a DP-HDMI converter after the Thunderbolt topology. DP1.4 is capable of 4K120Hz. An adapter is fine. Can you not spread misinformation?
Any USB4 hub (for example OWC 5-in-1 Thunderbolt Hub) and a USB-C DP1.4 to HDMI2.1 adapter attached
Please don’t make such absolute claims just based on what you think should work. You clearly haven’t actually tried this yourself, and the fact of the matter is, as the CalDigit rep above pointed out, that in general this will not work on MacOS today — you won’t get any FRL modes, which are needed for 4k120.
There are alternate firmwares that you can flash on some converters to make it work (see e.g. this thread, but it most definitely does not just work with any HDMI 2.1 adapter.
Thanks ! I see there are some conflicting opinions but appreciate this. Might just try it and see what happens -- if it doesn't work, I'll just return.
