How do I actually connect to my virtual machine?

Help

This seems like a dumb question. I'm following Spaceinvader's tutorial on creating a gaming VM, and once he clicks "create", it seems to take him straight into the VM. Or a bit later on in the video when he clicks on the VM in the VM tab, one of the options I see is "VNC Remote".

The only problem is, none of that is happening on my machine. I've created a virtual machine, I can see it is "started" in the VM tab, I can click on it to stop it or restart it or whatever, but I don't see any way of actually using the darn thing. The port number doesn't seem to be listed anywhere. Is there an App I'm supposed to install that let's me connect as a VNC client? Or is Unraid supposed to let me connect to a virtual machine out of the box? Am I a total idiot missing something obvious? Help is appreciated.

do you have a dedicated gfx card passed through to the VM? if you do, just plug a monitor into the GFX card and it should turn on..

If you dont have it passed through, then you should see "VNC Remote" and connect to it that way.

Space invader has a few tutorials.. Check this video out to get passthrough

Here's your options ---

  1. Passthrough GPU -- Start VM through Unraid GUI -- Connect Monitor Cable to Video Card directly -- There's a lot of guides on how do this, and space invader has one too.

  2. VNC Remote through the Unraid Gui -- Click on the VM -- Select VNC Remote -- You will get a local Console Desktop

  3. Remote Desktop -- If it's a Windows Machine -- You can enable Remote Desktop on it, and then from another PC You can RDP through Remote Desktop Connection (Start ---> Run --- MSTSC) -- (You would RDP to the Windows IP not the Unraid GUI IP)

  4. VNC to Desktop -- If it's a Linux Box then you'll have to find a walkthrough for your appropriate distro and then using a VNC Client from another machine, you can connect directly to the machine that way (You would connect once again to the VM IP not the GUI IP)

  5. If you don't feel like doing 3 or 4 -- You can install some sort of TeamViewer, Splashtop, Anydesk etc.....

Ok that makes sense. I’m only planning on using the VM remotely, so I don’t want to have to plug a monitor directly in. However I do want to benefit from the fact that my Unraid server has a GPU. My plan was to use either Steamlink or Moonlight to connect to it from an Apple TV. So how do I get the benefits of a GPU but without “passing through” the GPU?

If you've set it up to use the virtual display driver, when you click the icon (as you do to start/stop the VM) you should see "VNC Remote" while the VM is running.
