Any problem with an AMD Ryzen 5 mini pc for frigate?
I want to get a mini pc to run my 8 security cams plus HA. First time setting up this kind of thing, plus itll be in docker.
I was first considering the n100 but I saw that a ryzen 5 5560u is not much more for a lot more power/cores. I did already get a TPU since its needed.
I am only hesitate because I see intel recommended and talked about most. I also am confused on if there is problems running frigate using an amd, especially in docker.
Will it be fine or should I just stick with the n100? Thanks!

I'm using a N100 + M.2 TPU for 4 x 2k camera streams and its working perfectly fine with no issues.
I have an N305 + mini pcie TPU doing 8x 2k-4k cameras also running with no issues but I probably could have gotten away with less. I am just running a couple other things as well.
The bigger issues with mini-pcs is the storage space limits. It is hard to stuff high density inexpensive storage into a mini-pc. But mine fit both a m.2 and sata ssd so I have 2TB to work with.
Which PC model and which TPU?
While I don't have the processor you're asking about, my Kamrui Mini PC, which has an Intel 11th Gen N5105 Celeron processor (2.9GHz) is working great with my home automation, which includes several cameras, a Zigbee network with several sensors, and the regular WiFi also with a lot of sensors. I use a Coral TPU for processing camera images, and I run the live feeds into Frigate. Very robust for a $170 mini computer. (BTW, it came with Windows Pro but I installed Proxmox and am hosting various services using LXC containers including MQTT, Frigate, and HAOS). I also added an internal 1TB SSD for video storage. Again, a very capable little machine for my Home Automation needs. Hope this helps in some way.
I just bought a Kamrui mini PC (AK2) which has a N100 alder lake. I'm running HAOS on it without anything else (deleted Windows Pro). At the moment I'm only running Frigate (still setting it up) with Wyze V2, V2 and a Tapo C120. I plan to slowly replace the other three cameras with the Tapo as the video quality is excellent. Will eventually get a zigbee controller for all my lights.
My CPU usage when looking at the system monitor sensor and then on the Glances add on shows Frigate is constantly active and chewing through CPU %. I haven't tried to get a Coral USB because they are SO expensive. Did you get one of the miniPCIE corals or did you get a standalone USB and then code Frigate to use that?
Yeah I guess it sounds like I should just go for it. I've been spending too much time being indecisive on the purchase lol
Frigate will use the Intel instructions for video decoding, which, IIRC, aren’t present in the Ryzen CPUs.
Frigate uses 'amd-vaapi' for decoding on AMD iGPUs.
I am using one of the AMD MiniPCs for Frigate along with a Coral AI USB for 10 cameras without issue. If you run into issues, feel free to give a shout. Good luck!
