Your ISP will see (at a minimum) DNS requests for any of those apps that don't go through VPN (and depending on your VPN provider, they may get DNS info even if it is routed through a VPN server). In the US, browsing torrent trackers/sites is not illegal, and likely won't cause you any conflict from your ISP.

Torrenting copyrighted material in the US is illegal, so if you intend on doing that, your torrent/usenet client will need to go through VPN so that your ISP can't identify that traffic. But the bigger threat is your home IP address being captured by someone in the swarm that is getting IPs on behalf of copyright holders, in order to take action through ISPs. That is the main benefit that a VPN offers: the IP that the swarm sees is the IP of a VPN server.

Some people route everything through VPN as a precautionary measure.

Spot on.

I have completely moved away from torrents to use net. Moved my router to pfsense. Now I do dns over tls.

Use net is so much safer to use. I used a VPN and torrents and still got a copyright notice. Trackers can still get ya.

Putting Sonarr and Radarr through a VPN can cause issues with searches. The databases they use can block the VPN IP address due to too many requests and then your searches will start failing.

That's true, I hadn't thought of that when I wrote the post, I had the case with Jellyfin too a few months ago.

Unless you live in a Country that blocks torrent searches you only need to use a VPN for your download clients.

I’ve heard that a setup similar but not exactly like mine, only passes Qbit and NZBget through a VPN.

What's the point of having Qbitt and NZBget on the same network? Won't you download faster? Or is it just a slave?

All my *arrs route including Prowlarr are routed via a VPN. Probably no real need, but why not eh?

Aren't you having problems searching for data by passing everything through the VPN?
