Surface loses their price fast even though they are good machines. I had a Surface pro 7 that I spent 2k on at launch. Tried selling it this year for 1K - no one even messaged me. Ended up selling for £400...
Its just because they churn out a new one every year. $400 is honestly pretty fair in terms of resale for the SP7. I think for models earlier than sp8 have a much sharper decline since SP8 was the first refresh model in a long time, but thats just a guess.
I have an SLS1 with 16GB and 512GB, and it's still quite a great laptop. Battery life is not as good as it could be, but I recharge it a lot.
IMHO, it's the best pen-supporting laptop I have ever used.
It has IMHO a better cast/value than SLS2.
Would not get it. Personally I would try to get an M1 (Apple Silicon) device if it allows you to do your work because the Surface Laptop Studios (and pretty much any Microsoft device) have terrible battery life.
The SLS1 has an Intel 11th gen chip and a power - hungry dGPU.
I love mine. It's my main work machine. But for run vmwares ? No.
It's an well built device, great display, really good feeling. But CPU is limited, you gonna need ram so at least 32gb.
For 1000€ , you can find Lenovo, HP, Asus with better hardware :)

if you dont need gpu, sp9 is much faster
Sure. But for me, the SLS is a better form factor, and fits better in my laps during travels. I had the SP3, still working well.

If you need the quasi-tablet function and you can’t find a better deal, the SLS1 is fine (battery life is not exceptional but does okay).
If you don’t need that function (for, say Photoshop/Illustrator/Fresco) then I would recommend finding something that isn’t trying to be everything.
Expertise: Day 1 SLS1 owner who teaches Photoshop.
