Is it possible to run a gaming PC in a rack?

Help

Like the title says, I have a gaming PC with both an i7-8700k and a 1080ti in a standard ATX board. Both are liquid cooled with AIO coolers and I would like to keep it that way. I have two drives, a 2.5" SSD and a 3.5" HDD. Thing is desk space is at a premium, and I have a rack with only one server on it now. Would it be possible to rack the gaming computer and transfer the components to a more rack friendly case? That way I could run video cables and data cables to the desk and free up some space? Could I run a cable long enough to push 144hz to a monitor? HDMI? USB for peripherals? The distance from the rack to the desk would be about 30-40ft.

I've done something like what you want to do. My wife really wanted to play PC games, but wanted a console experience in the living room. So I built a gaming PC in a rackmount case (I'm fairly certain I used a Rosewill RSV-R4000 case), which is mounted in my garage enclosure/rack. I then ran two cables under the floor to my living room television: HDMI and an active USB extension cable. On the other end I put a USB 3.0 hub for peripherals (receivers for a wireless gamepad, keyboard/mouse combo, wireless headphones). For the console experience, I basically just set up the PC to boot into Steam Big Picture mode, and she can select and play games using the gamepad. For everything else, there's the keyboard/mouse combo, but she doesn't use that to play games.

Is it liquid cooled? My big question is whether or not I can fit a dual fan and single fan rad in one of the cases. That would cut down on noise. Were you running 60hz or higher on the cable? My monitor is 144hz and I can go back 😬

Another thought was going to be putting a GPU in an r710, just not sure if that can be done either....

As far as this goes I do believe you're not able to do that in the 7:10 because it only support add on cards that are 25 watt pcie lane and then the rest of the power would have to be made up by 6pin power

Yes you could the issue would be transferring video and accessories over something. If you watch linustechtips he did this with his personal servers at home and ran everything through a optical Thunderbolt 3 cable I think. Maybe it was Thunderbolt 2 either way. Or you could do everything through Steam in-home streaming or Nvidia stream. Just depends on what you're wanting to do or wanting in General

Absolutely! I'm actually planning on doing this myself next year (hopefully!). Check out Linus's personal rig update back in 2015 for a decent example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moCmcPDkDac&t=786s

1+ for Linus’s personal rig. Super cool setup especially with the thunderbolt runs to the separate room, so no messy clutter or heat. Was about to post the same thing until I saw you’d beat me to it.

get a rack shelf and you can put whatever you damn well please in the rack! :P

Buy a rack mount case. You can find them on Newegg. They’ll take normal ATX components. Or just buy a rack shelf and stand it up. Either way will work.

Don’t Dick around with streaming. Go to monoprice.com and just buy the thickest cables they sell that your monitor can connect with. If it supports DisplayPort and hdmi then literally go with whatever is thicker of the two that is long enough. Get a usb extension cable with an active repeater if the run is more than 10 meters. You might need to buy a USB sound card if you plan on using speakers.
