Should I turn HDR on in Windows or leave it off?

Are there any downsides to having HDR permanently on while using/gaming on my PC?

If you are running Windows 11 it's not really a problem as you can turn down the SDR brightness slider so your desktop is not on full blast all the time.

I leave it on 100% of the time. no issues.

In Windows 10? Off unless viewing specific content. In Windows 11? I have it set to auto mode and it works and looks perfect. Turns on when I’m playing HDR games or video just like regular TV content.

See idk why but for me it makes my desktop look washed out. I have auto hdr enabled. I know on desktop it’s turning hdr on because my lg will show HDR top right corner. When I check LG settings it’s showing me the hdr picture settings. Am I doing something wrong?

Where do you check this option ? I always forget turning on HDR before launching a game.

Windows 10 = Leave it off

Windows 11 = Turn it on or off, it looks gorgeous in Windows 11.

I have it set to on all the time. Microsoft has a free app in the store now called Windows HDR calibration. It works wonders and makes the Auto HDR in gaming better than most games own implementation of it. (42” C2 owner, previous 48” CX owner, also have a 65” C2 and 83” C1)

Windows HDR Calibration helped me dial in my brightness in the desktop. I'm 100% HDR in Windows 11 and I don't have any washed out colours or white that is too bright.

Its incredible.

Leave HDR turned off in Windows.

Before you start a game, press "WIN+ALT+B" to turn HDR mode on (if the game supports HDR).

Press the same keys again to switch HDR off. (Assuming you're using Win 11 as Win 10 doesn't have this shortcut.)

for anyone who likes to unininstall bloatware, This only works if you have xbox game bar on (by default). If you have it disabled/uninstalled for fps improvements, then it wont work and you need to do it manually
