Baldur's Gate 3 Modder Siegfre releases a tool that unlocks the Level Editor in the BG3 toolkit.
Yeah it's just crazy to me how people automatically decided that Larian = good guys so once a modder figured how to edit maps, it's game over for Hasbro and Larian can just start officially support it.
Even in a DnD campaign that scenario would be too unbelievable lol.
Also, this wasn't necessarily a "shitty decisions" from Larian. Supporting a map editor is a lot of work. It was really glitchy in their previous game. And one Larian is done with a game, they move on. The most likely reason why we don't have an editor is the same why we don't get DLCs/expansions - it's just not part of their working cycle.
While I disagree about it not being a shitty decision (just release it as is, let modders do what they want with it), I agree with everything else.
Larian made a choice (which I personally disagree with), of their own choosing. It’s not some conspiracy. If Hasbro didn’t want it, it would be made evidently clear.
Hasbro is evil, but not every decision and choice are made by them. Larian is an independent studio, and can make their own decisions.
As for that online tabletop thing (I know you didn’t bring it up, but several people have) WOTC is pushing, that’s so fundamentally different from BG3 it’s laughable to even bring it up. One is a video game, the other is a way to play tabletop DnD online with others (afaik).
EDIT: There’s also the fact there’s a shit ton of ways to play DnD online, and I doubt anyone is going to make a mod that allows that as easily or simply as the many other methods. Your average DM/GM probably won’t be making mods or maps, as that requires more skills outside DMing. Not saying DMs are dumb or incapable, but it’s very different set of skills than coding mods or using advanced mod tools.
Personally, I'm understanding if it turns out either way. I'd like to see custom campaigns and expansive mods with new zones at some point, but if Larian doesn't want it and they patch this out and make it hard/impossible, so be it. They delivered a 10/10, once in a generation experience to me. They have earned the right to decide what is best for their studio, and if that is with not supporting a level editor so as to maintain the sanctity of the experience then c'est la vie.
