Lessons Learned: Upgrading your Legion GO's SSD!
Alright folks - I thought I'd share my struggles / lessons learned for the early adopters of the Legion GO on how to upgrade your SSD.
-
Create a USB Recovery Drive First! Unlike the ROG Ally, there's no cloud recovery feature. You'll need to go to the below Legion Support URL and download relevant recovery media. Have your device serial number at the ready, and make sure you create a Lenovo account. https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-go-8apu1/?linkTrack=Caps%3ABody_BrowseProduct
Bonus Lesson Learned: Do this on a Windows PC. The Recovery media creation utility only appears to be available as an .exe. -
Have a Dongle on hand - It's useful to have a USB hub on hand to help with the reinstall. I used a keyboard to help navigate the boot drive menu.
-
RTFM! Read the Friggin Manual --- Lenovo has a useful PDF with a section on how to open up the Legion GO and remove the SSD. https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/legion_go_hmm.pdf. It takes a bit more force / effort to open up the device compared to the steam deck and Ally, but the plastic is pretty durable.
-
Be Careful with the Mylar. The SSD is covered in a mylar sleeve -- unlike the Steam Deck's SSD, you can't easily slide out the drive. It's best to unwrap it like a stick of bubble gum, but very carefully -- it's very fragile!
-
Don't over tighten the screws when reassembling the device! Luckily I didn't strip my screws or damage the device, but I've done that on too many other occasions... don't over-tighten them.
-
Be patient - Related to the above... just take your time with the process!
Just clone the drive with Macrium Reflect.
Not sure why you got downvoted, but this is the way…. But why are we unwrapping the ssd?
Using Macrium Reflect is an option if you want to transfer what you have currently installed.
If you want a fresh start with all of the Legion Go software, I used the Lenovo Recovery Media. You just create an account, add your Legion Go and request a recovery media (digital download). It’ll create a USB for you and it worked perfectly.
what size is the OEM onboard SSD - 2230 or 2242? I have a 2Tb disk on order which is 2230, does this have the required mounting points?
The included SSD is a 2242 drive. I don't recall seeing mounting points for the 2230 drive, but am sure you could purchase an adapter on the cheap to make sure it fits. I think this one was recommended in other posts (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BTP4NP9F?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&th=1).
Does macrium not run on mac? I have a MacBook Pro and it is refusing to open when I finish downloading the file from their website.
why are you trying to run it on your Mac? Run it on your LeGo, clone the old drive to the new one before installing.
Couldnt you just install windows normally then download legion space and relevant drivers?
No. I tried that and it kept saying “there are drivers and files missing” when I tried a normal win11 installer. Had to use the official recovery tool from Lenovo for the legion and now the OS is finally installing.
I have done the upgrade with the new SSD all nice and smooth I opened the legion go case, unplugged the battery cable removed the ssd and removed the Mylar sheet installed the new ssd within the protection sheet plugged the battery cable closed the case when I pushed the power button it started blinking white system working fine only to find out the battery not charging anymore the light still blinking white, I’m so confused I have no idea what I have done, if anyone can tell me anything would be appreciated.
