Destiny 2 isn't dying, but things need to change.
This is not a rant.
Let's be realistic here. Destiny 2 isn't dying. Bungie has made it clear that they intend to continue working on Destiny for the foreseeable future, and the recent restructuring was for Bungie to focus MORE on Destiny 2 alongside Marathon. I mean, at the moment it's unlikely that we'll be getting a future expansion as big as TFS, but considering how big TFS actually was, it makes sense that we wouldn't see another expansion that outdoes it anytime soon. That being said, while they are moving away from annual expansion release model, that doesn't necessarily mean there will be no more expansions PERIOD. There have been rumors about a new model involving smaller, more frequent releases in the form of two "content packs" alongside seasonal content. Keep in mind, this is coming from Liz who's history with leaks has been hit or miss. But even if this rumor was somewhat true, that doesn't mean D2 can't go back to bigger single expansions later down the road. On top of that, some of the current employees interviewed by Breier have expressed optimism for the future under Tyson Green, a Bungie Vet who's now the game's director. There are plans to explore brand new worlds and characters for Frontiers, more free updates like Into The Light, and a rebranding effort to help better bring newer players on board. While things do seem bleak at the moment, D2 still very much has a future.
That being said, and this may be a pretty hot take, Sony's now imminent takeover of Bungie's upper management will be a blessing moreso than it is a curse. Sony is not perfect, don't get me wrong, but they still know how to properly manage a business. Bungie NEEDS new leadership, and Pete Parsons has REPEATEDLY proven that he is no longer longer up to the task. His blatant refusal to let the devs fix the game, his gross mismanagement of the company's finances, and his weird thing for buying cars he'll never actually drive are why Bungie is in such a dire state. He has actively sabotaged and impeded Bungie's progress while letting those who actually get shit done pay the price for his failures. He has proven time and time again that he is INCAPABLE of leading from the front, which is why Sony's takeover is a blessing in disguise. Because for better or for worse, Bungie needs ACTUAL leadership to not only avoid another Lightfall, but to properly get back on their feet.
So in short, Destiny still has a future, Pete Parsons needs to go, and Gambit is still fun.
Oh, and Failsafe is best girl.
I've become pretty apathetic about all this news surrounding Destiny (specifically how it impacts Destiny, I certainly feel for those who lost their jobs and hope they all land on their feet with other studios or wherever they decide to take their careers).
I'll continue to play the game until it stops being fun. It's edging there right now, but I also don't really find this Episode all that engaging. I'm much more looking forward to Revenant and Heresy.
My biggest concern about the comments coming out about the future of Destiny is how much they are talking about "free" content. Given the fact that Bungie is in financial hardship, cutting their biggest money makers (annual expansions) in favor of content they are touting as being free sounds like a trip on the highway to microtransaction hell.
Wait…. Are you saying you’re NOT having fun going to Nessus and collecting Radiolaria samples week after week?!?
I second this entire option.
It's not just Parsons, there's other c-levels that need to go as well. Parsons isn't the only one making all the decisions and mismanaging the resources of the studio.
There's honestly no point in freaking out until there's an official post regarding the state of the game post-Heresy, because Year 7 is locked in at this point. And by that point, the people who want to leave the game will have already made their decision.
It's called final shape for a reason.....
Destiny may not literally be dying but my will to keep playing it sure is
What is this? Common sense and reason, on a Destiny subreddit? Out with you!
Gameplay and raids are still fun. Play other games and play destiny when you want
Some of us aren’t afraid of the cultists here that will down vote a realistic opinion.
Destiny 2 is still a great game. Shit happens when you take on more projects than you can support. They shouldn’t have ever hired all those people back when they did. Trimming back down to 850-900 is way more sustainable and only working on two IP’s is going to be better for the studio and the consumer.
A game can continue to keep getting content, and still "die" because how many players are gonna drop off without big DLCs to bring them back each year? People are already bored of the new episode format, which is just a rehash of seasons. Less players equals less income, which then means less content put out by Bungie.
