Does it work if you switch DPI while in a game full screen?
I tested this in Valorant, and if you are in fullscreen mode, changing the DPI does not take you out of fullscreen, but you cannot see the changed unless you exit fullscreen mode. If I need to switch my profile and I don't remember the colors, I usually ALT + TAB out of my game, check my DPI notification bar and go back to my game. However, it has worked in League of Legends for me without having to exit fullscreen, so I am assuming that certain games allow the popup and some don't. You should just test it in your game to see what happens.
