Buy a 4090 now and upgrade to a 5090 or wait for the 5090?
There have been a few threads about this earlier in the year, so I have collected some of the useful information.
Some other people have estimated the selling point for a used 4090 would be around $1500 USD. At current USD retail, the 4090 sells for $1819. This would be a loss of $319 USD. However, on current resale sites such as Ebay, a used 4090 is being as sold at $1740. That's a much smaller loss of $79.
Some leaks have suggested that the 5090 could see a Q4 release this year (likely December) with a selling point of 2000-2500 USD.
Assuming the selling point could drop for a used 4090 at any time, would you either;
A) spend $79-319 USD to have a 4090 for a year, and upgrade to a 5090 when it releases. Or;
B) just wait for the 5090.
Obviously everyone has a different system so the answers may vary. But let's try to keep our answers from the perspective of buying a PC for the first time.
The 4090 will be able to play everything at max settings all the way til the 6090 or whatever is next. No point waiting until the end of this year.
4090 doesn’t even play hogwarts legacy at max settings on 1440p. You are just making shit up lmao.
You don’t need to upgrade from a 4090. A lot of people seem to have the mentality that they NEED to have the latest and most expensive card. But you can go years without having to spend any money.
4090 will likely drop to 1100-1200 by the time you can get a 5090.
Not necessarily, the 3090 and 3090ti didn't drop much until the 4070ti provided similar performance at $800-900. I think the 4090 will stay at around $1400-1500 until the 5070ti or 5080 matches it or surpasses it for less money.
4090 should cover you for a long time, no reason to upgrade so soon to a 5090 if you get one
Honestly if you get a 4090 everything after that is arbitrary. You should probably just keep it and not upgrade unless you have 1000s of dollars to blow for unnecessary incremental upgrades/clout.
I wouldn't really trust anyone anticipating future prices, as pricing and availability of the things has proven to be the wild west in the past. The resale value of a 4090 right now is irrelevant and it'll plummet leading up to 5000 series release.
I am building a new pc and the GPU is the last item I have left to purchase. I have decided that I will buy a 4060 or 4070 on sale now and wait for the 5090. If I buy the card new, it will have 2-3 years warranty which should keep a reasonable resale price in 10 months time.
I can't justify to spend £2000 on a 4090 now when in 10 months time I can get something much better for around the same price (fingers crossed).
Only reason I would upgrade that often would be if I were buying new systems outright to use the previous ones as part of a local rendering farm. Or I start shitting money.
The 5090 will be almost impossible to get for months and probably the US will boycott China again so getting one will be extremely difficult (because China traders will try to scalp them all from other countries in advance). Plus do you really need a 4090?
