Circlet supremacy! The only gear piece I never ever changed in 2 playthroughs once I got it dragon forged, and then immediately did the same on PC with.
Hopefully there are some with high stats or special effects later on, but even the first one I've found now is a godsend.
Ive been rocking the no-helmet style (#fashion over def) until I found the wolfpelt „helmet” which I absolutely love as an archer. Black bandit bandana covering just the mouth works amazing too.

If you find a particularly cool helmet there's an option to open and close the visor though which is nice
