Make no mistake, the 4090 is a ridiculous card. The fact you'll find yourself semi-regularly CPU-bound at 4K is insane.
is the 7900xtx supposed to be equivalent to the 4090?
Not really, but it’s AMD’s tier 1/top GPU so it faces the 4090 naturally.
Obviously the 1000 Euro/Dollar difference and your budget will help with the buying decision or your usecase will.
Yes. If it wasn't, AMD would've just called it 7800XT.
AMD wanted the smoke so they called it 7900XTX.
Last generation 6900XT ($1000) was a 3090 ($1500) competitor, why would you pretend like 7900XTX is not a 4090 competitor this time around?
Basically, it's a flagship versus flagship situation, NATURALLY people will directly compare them.
EDIT: people who downvote me - search your feelings, you know this to be true. Last generation it was all about 6900XT being the 3090 competitor despite similar price difference between them as the one between 7900XTX and 4090 now.
No, but the nvidia fanbois and Tubers/influecers that are proud members of the nvidia marketing team keep pushing this narrative in a way to make the whole AMD line of GPUS as if they are trash.
Also, funny enough, they also ignore the price difference.
4090 is basically a titan, it's 620mm2, 76bn transistors.
i hope people gonna be reasonable and take this in a calm, measured manner

I bought a 4090 because of my 138Hz 4K display since it’s the only card that can deliver that kind of performance but the XTX is still impressive.
I don’t think that I will switch from Nvidia anytime soon but in regards to CPUs I already made the switch and couldn’t be happier.
Just helped me justify again that computer gaming is not worth my money
