Build an RTX 4080 Super PC now or wait for the Nvidia 5000 Series?
Hi Guys,
I'm relatively new to PC building so please excuse if I make some errors regarding PC tech. I've decided to finally build my first High-End Gaming PC, this is what I was planning to buy:
Goal: 1440P, Ultra Settings, 144FPS Gaming on all Mainstream Titles (with upgradeability to 4K later)
Motherboard: MSI X670E Gaming Plus Wifi
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
GPU: Nvidia RTX 4080 Super
PSU: BeQuiet Pure 12 1000W
As you probably already know, Nvidia is going to announce their next 5000 Series of GPUs soon (End of September?).
My question is: Is it a good decision to build a completely new rig with an older graphics card (4080 Super) shortly before the release of the newer series? Of course its always better to get the latest parts, especially if they're about to come out soon. But with graphics cards, what I've experienced in the last few years brought up the fear that bots&scalpers buy up all the stock 5000 GPUs on release, the prices of the 4000 series will rise because nobody can get the newest gpu so they get the second newest, and in the end im stuck with buying an overpriced 4000 series or i have to wait multiple months or even years before I get to buy the 5000 series.
So my final questions are:
-
Is my current 4080 Super setup overkill for 1440P Ultra 144Fps gaming or not?
-
Do you think the prices of the 4000 Series will fall or rise with the release of the 5000 series?
-
Is it a good decision to wait for the relase of the 5000 Series before building my pc or should I not take the risk and build it with the parts available now?
-
How long until I can realistically expect to get my hands on the new 5080/5090 series ?
I hope I was able to formulate my questions clearly enough, thanks in advance for helping guys !
older graphics card (4080 Super)
Oh, yeah that old thing. Just the newest generation of Nvidia GPU you can buy right now. It released January 31st, its barely 7 months out 😀
7 months?? Ewww gross
That's way newer than my 4090, should I go swap one into my build and get rid of my relic?
I was there…3000 years ago…
Chances you will get a 5080 on launch are slim anyway, so theoretically it releases soon but when it's widely available, who knows
That's why I went with 4080s a few months back. I know I'd never have the time to spend hunting a 5080 down for God knows how long after launch when they are hardly available.
5000 series won't be all that better price/perf* and there are no major drawbacks in 4000 series. Power, drivers, what's on offer - all looks good. Pricey? Yes. Bad? No.
4080S is a solid high end 16G card. I bought one myself 6 months ago.
For 1440p it's already close to being an overkill. 5000 series won't give you anything more than maybe 20-30% more perf/$, but who the fuck cares when you are in around 1k$ territory already.
Just get it and enjoy it today.
* 1080Ti was GOAT. 2000 series was a complete fail. 3080 was a noticeable jump in perf. 4000 series rewrote rules in power efficiency. Nvidia is focused on their datacenter offerings right now to keep milking AI craze. They have no motivation to win market share by dropping prices or achieving breakthrough perf increases right now.
As someone that maxed settings with 4070 Ti, it's overkill. CPU becomes the limiting factor
the longer u wait the less time you have to enjoy the pc. go for it boss
Idk if people will scalp the 50 series as much as they past.
Mining is unprofitable, people have a lot less free cash to buy pcs, the pc market is in a down turn, and some scalpers are still trying to sell their old cards. I saw one locally trying to sell a 6800xt for $500 and other cards based on new -$20. Even though some cards aren't being stocked anymore(so it's overpriced).
