Dynamic mic that can attach to headphones? Or a good mic+boom arm recommendation.
Hi all, I'm looking to get a new mic for streaming. I currently have a blue yeti which I am having difficulties using ideally due to how insanely sensitive it is. I can only get so far tweaking settings, so I feel I need to upgrade to a dynamic mic. The problem is that I want a mic that won't block any of my view of my main monitor or side monitor, but I know a dynamic mic must be close to my face. I thought of just getting one that can attach to a pair of headphones but I literally cannot find an example of that at all? I could be bad at googling but I only find headsets, and not a mic that is built to attach to headphones. Alternatively, if there is a mic+boom arm combo that could work from, say, under my desk rather than above that could prevent field-of-view issues.
I am not well-versed in microphones, so if anyone has any recommendations for my situation I would appreciate it. Also, for budget, while I am not looking to drop 1k or some insane price on a mic and mic setup, I can spend a few hundred if it is really worth it.
I just have a cheap boom arm clamped to the side of my desk. It doesn't block my view at all. I just have a Samson Q2U stuck in it.
Did you look at the Antlion ModMic? That one clips onto your headphones. Can't remember if it's dynamic or condenser, though.
Antlion modmic is said to be pretty good but ridiculously expensive
I have a regular mic on a standard mic arm and it does not block my view at all. There are also some mic arms that extend low to aid with this as well.
I use a Shure SM7B, I know it’s not in everyone’s budget but it has multiple uses for me, including work so it was worth the investment. I have it on a Rode PSA-1+ boom arm. Your other option if you’re not getting the sound quality you’re looking for is acoustic treatment in the room you use
Audio Technica makes an AT2100X that has XLR USB and has a headphone port. I think Samson Q2U has the same deal. the AT2100X just has a higher bit depth so maybe it'll sound better at the end of the day.
It was my first mic, but I hate having a mic near my face.
I recommend the Samson MBA48 boom arm. The thing is huge. It’s been one of my favorite purchases for my setup. My mic is never in my way, and if it was, I could just effortlessly swipe it to the side without it making any noise.
If you want a decent sounding mic that attaches to your headset, check out the Antlion Modmics, either the USB or Wireless versions. They have a handy magnet that attaches to your headset with a built-in adhesive. After it's installed, the mic itself just snaps on and off without issues.
I use the Wireless Modmic for streaming and often get compliments about the mic quality. Feel free to check out any of my recent VODs to hear how it sounds.
Coupled with the Wireless headset I'm using, being completely untethered is amazing. I can go grab a drink from the kitchen while still chatting on stream.
An SM58 ($100) plus boom arm ($50 cheapo arm) plus USB interface ($50 M-Audio) plus cables. You might also need a fethead ($60) to provide enough gain.
