Is worth it a 4k monitor ?

Build Help

I'm going to buy a new setup with 4080, ryzen 7 7800x3d and 64 ddr5 6000, but a coworker said he bought a 2k monitor and regretted it and said I wouldn't be able to play games at 4k 60fps.

A 4080 can handle 4K for sure. If it's below 32 inches I don't think 4K makes sense unless you sit very close or do graphical work. I use a 55 inch 4K OLED with a 3090.

Do you play games where having an extremely high refresh rate would benefit you? Or would you just want it to look more crisp? Cause 4K is significantly harder to run than 1440p. I think 1440p high refresh maxed out everything is the sweet spot.

I have a 4k 27 inch and it’s amazing. Definitely makes sense

I have an 28'' and I already find it big. When I'm gonna buy a 4k screen and pc I'm gonna go for 32''. 55 inch sounds crazy. Isn't it overkill?

There's a 3rd option

3440x1440 ultrawides

A bit harder to drive than 1440p but not as hard to drive as 4k

I cannot go back after switching to ultra wide, it's so fucking immersive

Yes, I moved to 4k and I love it. It all depends on the monitor you get of course.

Coworker is prolly clueless, but I’d get 4k 120 or 1440 165 to 240

I made the mistake of buying a 32 inch 4k, and now I can never go back. I will be adjusting my pc instead

2k is absolutely worth it. 4k can be more subjective based on screen size. You should go to a shop where you can see some examples in person

I have a lg 4k 165hz monitor and a 4090 and it looks amazing. Thanks to gsync I wouldn’t even realize any fps drops unless I have a counter on, or they are really bad.

For any competitive game, you just tune down a few settings and easily hit the Nvidia reflex fps (if available in game) consistently (in my case 152 fps, locked with riva tuna unless ingame has a slider).

Going above the monitor hz will lead to screen tearing anyways, which (in my testing in apex where the 4090 easily hit the cap of 300) looks way worse/stuttery than locked fps in gsync/vsync range.

And I don’t wanna hear about „muh input latency“. Yeah, but as if it would actually make a difference for the non professional player.

And even if you have to tune down the setting a bit, I suppose high 4k will look better than epic 2k. Obviously panel makes a difference, but strictly comparing 1:1, this should be the case.

Edit: what he smoking, 4080 can easily hit 4k60 in any current game, besides like city skylines 2, etc.
