Is a 12900k still a reasonable purchase in 2024?
I've been needing a PC upgrade for a while now. Currently I have a i7-4770 with a RTX 2080. I came across this deal at micro center and I could get a motherboard, ram and cpu for $399 +tax.
I know this CPU is a couple years older but it's far newer than what I have now. My goal with this upgrade is to play open world single player games at 4K(16:9) or 2K (23:9) at high settings around 60-80FPS.
Do you think this is a reasonable deal or is it really worth forking over some more cash for a newer CPU?

Considering how well the cpu oc’s it is pretty great value. Also since you don’t upgrade very often it makes more sense to get this over the 7700x bundle bc u won’t be upgrading within am5 lifespan anyways and the 12900k is a better cpu in pretty much every way

12900k is a great value with that deal. You’re going to be good for awhile with that CPU. Just upgrade the GPU when the time is right. Hardware advancements with CPU’s are slowing down.
I have a 12600k and I'm very satisfied with it (bought it late 2022). I've seen it has dropped in price to around $175 so if you are heavily budget limited I would recommend a 12600k or 12600kf and use the extra money on a better GPU. With a 12600k and say a 4070Ti you can get over 60 FPS in any game released so far at pretty much maxed settings. And if you're not going to overclock I DEFINITELY recommend the 12600k as the 12900k needs a pretty substantial OC to really see any performance gains over the 12600k.
the 7700x bundle makes more sense to me at $400
It is a worse cpu tho and upgrade path doesn’t matter if u don’t upgrade often like this person
i actually just downgraded to a 12900ks because the 14900k is likely to fry itself in under a year for my heavy workloads.
the 12900ks is 10% better on paper than 12900k but realistically it's only like 2-3% better based on your application and it's only 25% worse than a 14900k at half the price.
do you really need 25% extra performance out of a cpu that powerful that requires 11 industrial powered fans or a 480 water cooler? I don't think so, not untill the GPUs match the market and start demanding 700W so you have to get yourself a 1500W PSU as a starter. THEN I think cpu performance at this level won't be enough for those newer gen GPUs that are double the size of what we have now
Absolutely. Get a new RTX GPU, though.
Considering the 13th gen and 14th gen suffer from degradation leading to a 100% fail rate, uhm yeah!
