Does Aeternum require a new character?

As the title, my friend and I are thinking about returning to New World for Aeternum, and we were wondering if a new character is required, or if we can use our max level characters from New World launch? We played for about 4 months and got most of our skills to max, but left and haven't returned since.
Is it possible to bring in our old characters? Is it even worth it if that's the case?

It’s just an update to the game. Most are assuming with the way it’s being handled that current pc servers will still be dead though.

You can use your old characters or make new ones, New World: Aeternum is an update for the PC game. If you want to play on console, you'll need to make a new character.
If you played for 4 months at launch, your max level characters aren't really max level any more. There's a DLC that increased level cap to 65 (and tradeskills to 250) and you'll need it to access the new content. Gear and perks have changed, new weapons added, etc

No you will not lose your characters. It is just a rebrand of the exact same game.

Bottom line: aeternum is a small game update for current players, enabling console access who can choose to play on console only or cross play servers.
Nothing happens to your existing characters, beta progression is not carried over. Playing the fresh start platform will provide 30 - 120 days of alive feeling servers and equitable player footing.
After that... well .. you've been warned..repeatedly.

No but most people are going to play on fresh start so in a way it’s yes if you want to be on alive servers
I'll just make a new one to experience the new MSQ.
Make new chars for the fresh strat servers. The experience of playing a new fresh server is always worth it for a while.
Then go back playing old chars on legacy or transfer fresh chars to legacy, after fresh servers get low on population.
