Just got the Edifier R1280DBS..... But They Sound Kinda Meh? Anyone Else?
So I just got these speakers yesterday, and man, I was hyped to get them set up. Unboxed them, plugged them in, and sat back to have a listen. But within seconds of listening, something felt... off. The highs and mids just sound kinda dull, almost lifeless.
Now, it's definitely an upgrade from my old Creative Pebble Plus in terms of build and bass, but I low-key prefer the sound on my old setup right now. It’s not hitting the right spots. So, I thought maybe I got a dud or something, but I went to my friend's place he's got the same model and guess what? Same dullness. 😕
Is this just how these speakers sound, or am I missing something? Anyone else dealt with this?
It really depends on your perspective and where you came from. 20 years ago, I was used to those crappy plastic PC speakers and would have found those Edifier speakers to be absolutely amazing. Now, I am spoiled by high-end speakers and amplifiers and would have found them to be "meh" as well.
These are what you pay for, small bookshelf speakers with a lot of connection possibilities. I liked them, but I only paid 12 Euros in a secondhand store so money we'll spend.
It always takes your ears getting used to listening to new speakers, so give it some time. I used them for gaming and movies on my small screen and they sounded pretty good. Enough base and the mids didn't disappoint, it was lacking a little in clarity but then again they are only 120 euros new.
Have you tried moving them around to find the sweet spot?
What kind of music are listening to? How big is your room? I own these set up at my computer desk, in a small room. Mostly listen to FLACC files. They sound amazing to me for powered speakers at the price. I have used a couple different small powered subwoofers with crossover controls on these speakers and IMO that’s what really takes them to the next level. Caveat is that you have to be sitting at your desk lined up. If I’m in another part of the room, yeah they lose some luster.
TLDR-Room size/listening position matters, subwoofer doesn’t need to be anything fancy, but really helps these little guys rock.
They ain’t Great
They are one step up from PC speakers, and you get a lot for the money, but it's not audiophile by any standard.

Interested in what you have plugged into them.
I have a pair I use with a Schiit DAC from my iMac using Apple Music lossless / hi-res, and they’re great value for money in my opinion. I find them clear and simple, even better with a paired sub.
But they are what you pay for. Compared to my (still budget) HT setup downstairs, they’re nowhere near as good.
Hi. You got Bluetooth. That is what you paid for. You didn't get those for sound.
I've heard them. I think I literally prefer same price Logitech speakers over them with the little bass cube.
I am not sure what you are expecting. You got the all in one solution with convenience. I know getting a used AVR and budget speakers on sale is harder and possibly more expensive, but it is way way better.
