Lecithin Added Before or After Oil Infusion (and other rookie questions)?
Complete rookie, but have a bunch of nugs I am infusing into MCT oil/solid coconut oil. I have a billion questions, but just to get started, I am wondering when to add lecithin—while infusing these oils or down the road when I go to cook?
If it helps with shelf-life of the infused oil, I can see adding it before...but then thought perhaps the best practice is to leave the infused oils pure and only add the lecithin when combining my infused oils with, say, chocolates/etc.
I envision having mason jars on hand for months, if that factors into the decision. :)
I plan on rolling up my sleeves and making a bunch of small batch oils tomorrow, so wanted to ask...before or after (or does it not matter)?
Also, is there an 'easy button' with edibles? My priorities would be shelf-stable for at least a week (LOVE the year shelf-life of disp. bought edibles, but don't want to make this a science experience while running the risk of mold) and portable would be nice (take some on the road for long weekends, etc, though 97% consumption will be at home).
I can't really store large batches in the fridge/freezer, but I could put a week's worth of chocolate in a bag of frozen veggies where teenagers would never look, of course...but like to get a shelf-stable bar that could sit out for a week and not melt. Gummies are doable, but seem more elaborate and less shelf-stable? Even the pre-mix packs say to keep in the fridge and use within a few days...just like to whip up a batch of something once a week/every other week).
I plan to do some solid coconut oil, as I read it helps with chocolate stability at room temperature, but unsure if I should go heavier on the MCT for ease of use/versatility, half and half, heavier on the coconut oil if a chocolate fan, which recipes would serve me best for portability, etc, etc, etc....overthinking it, of course. :)

A little lecithin can emulsify and homogenize. A whole lot of lecithin can apply some liposomal encapsulation and boost bioavailability and double the punch as well as other added gains in function.
Going to throw this out there. I used lecithin on my last batch of infused coconut oil and it made the brownie batter and cookie dough really stiff. The infusion worked well but I feel like the lecithin wasn't needed. Next time I am going to do the same recipe without the lecithin and see if that helps the batter and dough be more normal. The brownies turned out well but the batter was literally like dough consistency, the cookies never flattened out and basically baked as balls of dough lol. I feel like lecithin is more for making homemade gummies or something and not needed in butter/oil but I will let others comment on what they think.
I honestly can’t tell any difference between my gummies with or without lecithin so I stopped using it. Currently pretty high on one so I’d say they still work
Good to know, thanks! If it doesn't add to the shelf-life/mitigate mold, then I'll lean toward not adding it when infusing my oils. Many thanks!
I add an extra egg to my batter to take away that same stiffness.
Try using infused butter that has lecithin. Way moist brownies.
Sodium citrate!
I add my sunflower lecithin before I pour in my oil. I mix it in then add canna.
Get a handheld immersion blender. Makes things much easier and allows for a consistent blend of your ingredients. I use it on all steps that require mixing...from infusion to cooking.
When using lecithin you add it in during infusion process and whisk or stir in very VERY well.
Lecithin is an emulsifier, and it also helps absorption of thc. If you use lecithin and say u are using distillate to make gummies, the distillate will separate from the gummy mixture. You dont want that.
If u want to make baked goods I wld use infused butter w the lecithin. Butter always gives a more moist end product vs oil. I use butter in my brownies both infused and non infused. Total game changer. Use the same amount amount of butter the recipe calls for w oil. Just melt the butter first. If u dont want to add that much infused butter, just add regular uninfused butter to get you the required amount.
