You play through the same campaign as you would solo/single-player.
You can each create you own custom character.
You can't bring your characters from your existing saves. If you join a session, you'll be making a new character.
You'll be roughly the same level as each other. You may have some discrepancies based on background or something, but your EXP's wouldn't be too far apart. If you join mid-campaign, your new character gets the same EXP amount as the host (so you can level up up to the host's level).
If there are 2 or 3 of you, your party can bring a companion/hireling to fill up the party. Host can assign who controls the companions.
You can't interact with companion party members if you're not assigned that character.
You're free to move around provided you're all in the same region.
Loot isn't instanced per player. If an enemy has a unique weapon you can loot from it, then once someone get it, it disappears for everyone else. You can still transfer items between players and characters. This just means you can't duplicate unique items.
This game is so overwhelming and confusing I have never played the games before or dungeons and dragons and your comment leaves me even more confused about multiplayer😂
