Cannabis infused olive oil questions
So I'm planning to make my first batch of cannabis infused olive oil for the purpose of using Makdous. Makdous is a dish of olive oil-cured aubergines. They are miniature, tangy eggplants stuffed with walnuts, red pepper, garlic, olive oil, and salt. A recipe is also attached. My questions are :
-
Does the infused oil taste any different from the normal extra virgin olive oil?
-
Is the shelf life of infused oil different?
-
Are there different methods of oil infusion?
-
Should I go with olive oil infusion, or would it be better to focus on infusing one of the other ingredients, or even change the method of adding weed to the dish?

THC has no flavor but cannabis does, if you do a good job filtering out the plant matter you wont taste it
The THC degrades but doesn't expire, it will get less potent over time. Best stored in light proof container
Several but its best to use low heat methods as high heat will degrade the THC but no heat will make it difficult to fully infuse to the oil, it can take several weeks
Olive oil is one of the best things to infuse Cannabis with
Is a cheese cloth enough
I'm also asking for the shelf life of the olive oil (2 months would be good for me)
Can you give me the technique and ratios
We're talking about extra virgin olive oil right?
Any time you infuse you must use activated cannabinoids. If you use flower you must decarb first, 45-60 mins in oven at 250°f depending on batch size. A slight browning is normal. If you infuse with distillate it is already active and you just infuse it right into oil.
Infuse your oil on low heat (150-180°f) for 30 mins to 2 hours, stirring as much as possible. A hot plate with magnetic stirrer is perfect for this as it constantly mixes at high speed and maintains the heat too. Be aware of what materials you use during these hot processes, I prefer glass ball jars and stainless steel or silicone utensils.
Cannabinoids cling to fats so olive oil works. I prefer to use coconut oil for more "solid" edibles and mct oil for liquid infusions. Mct oil has awesome benefits and has a very long shelf life, its my favorite. You can also infuse butter which is versatile, try an infused bulletproof coffee! Try to make sure whatever you infuse will not be easily wasted. I'm imagining your infused olive oil running off the dish onto the plate and spreading around, avoiding people's stomachs. 😅
I wish I could use a different oil but the thing is Makdous is done with olive oil. And for sure nothing will go to waste 😊
I love this recipe idea! Sounds like a yummy snack that would definitely be a party pleaser. I’m also planning to infuse some olive oil soon, but I’m using distillate, which saves having to decarb and strain plant material. The plan is olive oil tincture, but I love the idea of recipes that don’t require cooking infused oil.
Yes it will definitely taste different. If you used decarbed flower its going to make the oil taste like burned weed, if you use decarbed bho it will taste like cannabis oil.
shelf life is the same as any other infused oil, a couple years if stored air tight and away from light
Not really, you just heat and add cannabis to it. This is a VERY VERY VERY VERY outdated method though and there are much better ways to consume cannabis.
if you want to get high, smoke it or eat it as its intended, all youre going to do is waste a bunch off cannabis and food making your dish taste like shit by using an infused oil with it.
Honestly just not as good of an idea as you think it would unless you happen to love the taste of burned weed.
If you are dead set on doing this for whatever reason, I would try to get your hands on some distillate or purchase some THCA diamonds and melt/decarb those. It will still taste like youre definitely eating weed but at least it wont taste like burned weed/oil
Something I've found that helps with flavor is water curing. I've never tried it with already cured bud, but seems like it would work the same. When I have buds that are extra leafy at harvest I separate them, let them dry, and put them in jars that I fill up with water. I let them soak for about a week changing the water multiple times at day and and rinsing with hydrogen peroxide if they start to smell bad at all. Once the water drains completely clear, set out to dry in a room with a fan. Once it's dry you will have bud with anything that's water soluble washed out of it.
