the targetting for ground finishers is very. .finicky right now yes.

you gotta like. .be standing at the right angle (i think its between a fallen enemy's legs) and be aiming pretty low to the ground, not just facing their direction.

Could be lag-related, which affects pretty much all types of finishers and mercy kills if you're a client. Try doing it while solo.

I was doing it solo. I was testing it in a solo match after a host migration and inside simulacrum. Both yeilded the same results.

Make sure auto-target melee is selected in your settings as well.

Doesn't do anything as far as I can tell in general, but it seems to help with finishers.

It’s inconsistent. Your best bet is just holding the attack button over them to continuously attack, hoping it will trigger.

I remember getting better luck without a companion - seemed that if the companion somehow interacted with the downed enemy it would prevent a finisher.

I’ve been spoiled by loot vacuum. Sentinel goes where ever i go.
