Prelude to War is a narrative arc involving the Lotus returning to the Sentients, preparing to wage war against the Tenno. The Prelude is presented as a series of mini-quests and cutscenes consisting of Chimera Prologue, Erra, and The Maker, while being referenced in Sentient-related lore and events.
Synopsis[]
The chronology of Prelude to War are as follows:
Chimera Prologue[]
- Main article: Chimera Prologue
This is the opening act to Prelude to War, and is the first miniquest playable in the series.
Thanks to The Man in The Wall, the Operator discovers that Ballas survived the events of The Sacrifice and was turned into an Amalgam, seemingly under Natah's surveillance. After cursing his saviour for his current condition, and while trying not to be discovered, he creates for the Tenno the
Paracesis, called the "Sentient-slayer", in order to prepare them for the upcoming war. His final motivations, however, remain unknown.
The Jovian Concord[]
- Main article: Fragments/Partnership
The Sentients are trying to find a way to neutralize their weakness to the Void. To do so, they force Alad V to create Amalgams with other races, while keeping a Ropalolyst on his cities to prevent any treason. The project is a success, and Alad V is tasked to gather data about the Tenno making them fight the Amalgams in a death game of Disruption. The Tenno, however, discover the Sentient plans and engage the Ropalolyst, while Alad V secretly tries to support them. Meanwhile, Natah contacts the Tenno claiming to have been freed by the Orokin manipulations, which forced her to turn her against her own race and family, and that she has now returned to them to finish the war. The Ropalolyst itself, which is in the end defeated, was nothing more than a sacrificial pawn, used to gather even more data about the Tenno.
Erra[]
- Main article: Erra (Quest)
This is the second miniquest playable in the Prelude to War series.
After the Tenno discover the first Murex ships in Veil Proxima, the Operator has a new vision, a flashback to the Old War. On Lua, the Operator is shown with other Tenno and the Lotus. The Lotus speaks to Erra, who calls her his sister, Natah. She replies, refuting his statement and calls herself The Lotus. The flashback ends with the Tenno attacking Erra with their Void Beams, but it is unclear whether or not he survived.
The Operator is then brought back in the present, inside of a Sentient mothership, and sees Erra, alive, talking to his now restored sister about the upcoming war, while keeping Amalgam-Ballas on a leash. Erra claims that Natah has memory lapses; as a matter of fact she still believes to be fighting the Orokin in the Old War, but nonetheless encourages her to lead the offensive against the Tenno, after her experiences gave her "something her race has never had before".
Operation: Scarlet Spear[]
- Main article: Operation: Scarlet Spear
The first true act of the New War is represented by a mass-invasion of Erra's Murex ships which breach Veil Proxima and deploy Condrix, info-gathering dropships, on Earth to gather data for future assaults. Little Duck, who had noticed the first Murex ships in Veil months ago, tried to inform Teshin about it, but wasn't believed. Now however, after the Sentients became a noticeable threat, he starts listening to what she says while also putting her in charge of the counter-offensive, in spite of her claims not to be a general.
The Tenno are instructed to fend off the invasion by poisoning the minds of the Murex ships, which can be considered living beings, forcing them to retreat. To do so, Tenno squads on Earth have the duty of intercepting Condrix ships and harvest their data, replacing them with poisonous Kill Codes. Such codes are then sent to Tenno squads in Veil Proxima, which instead board Murex ships to upload the Kill Codes in their cognitive nexus. In both instances the Tenno are forced to fight on two fronts, since the Grineer, lead by General Sargas Ruk, are also trying to harvest as much Sentient resources as possible while fighting the Tenno, believed to be the ones who caused the invasion.
The Maker[]
- Main article: The Maker
This is the third and last miniquest playable in the Prelude to War series.
Inside the Sentient mothership, Erra is telling Natah that their mother, who she wrongly believed to be alive, is dead and urges her to finish the war as "[she has] her fire". Natah notes that she remembers ordering the Tenno to attack Erra and that he was destroyed. Erra objects and states that she remembers wrong and will need time to completely heal from "what the Makers had done to [her]". Natah is not convinced and points at leashed Ballas asking if he is one of the Makers.
Erra suddenly grabs and throws Natah at the pedestal behind him, where she is trapped in a field of energy of unknown purpose. Erra tells her to "finish the war" and drops Ballas's leash. Ballas stands as he and Erra silently watch Natah.
Operation: Orphix Venom[]
- Main article: Operation: Orphix Venom
Recovering from Scarlet Spear, the Sentients have redoubled their offense and deployed Orphix, dropships armed with specialized disabling pulses, now capable of disabling Warframes. Fortunately, Father's Necramechs are still immune to the Sentient pulses, giving the Tenno a fighting chance with the Old War retired rigs.
As the Tenno fight back, Natah reveals her role in having taught the Orphix to disable Warframes. However she also secretly transmits a code to them: "I AM DYING".
Trivia[]
- The quest was first teased at TennoCon 2018. Devstream 122 announced the expected released date is before TennoCon 2019 (July 6), but Devstream 127 pushed back the release date due to the update being a "massive expansion".
- In Devstream 123, [DE]Steve advised not to sell the
Paracesis (despite not being possible to), implying it may be used in The New War. - Devstream 134 implied The New War is a narrative arc, the first quest of the arc being Rising Tide, while The New War quest itself is being released beyond Christmas 2019.
- Tennocon 2021 revealed the first gameplay of The New War, featuring three playable non-Tenno characters: Kahl-175, a Grineer Lancer; Veso, a Corpus Tech[1]; and Teshin. This is the second time ever in WARFRAME's history where players are able to play as non-Tenno characters and factions (the first being with the Golden Maw during The War Within).
- The release date was changed from 2019 to 2021, as a reference to its original announcement date.
- In Devstream 123, [DE]Steve advised not to sell the

Didn't these use to be replayable?
Hey can anyone help he stops talking after the first piece of sword and i cannot go any furhter from there
Couple of suggestions: rename this page to Prelude to War and remove all the New War quest info, then make a separate page for the New War quest, just to clear up any confusion
Кто переводит текст перевод почти всего не правильный
DE i know your game is amazing and all, but why the freak do we need a necramech for the new war, those things are hard to grind.
They made it easier to grind in the last mainline update so I'm not sure what to say. At the very least, they are tying together gameplay mechanics that were their own content islands for the past years.
Because sentients can disable our warframes and necramechs are the only thing that they can't shut down
And then it turns out the New war quest dont even have a section shuting down the frame the only orphix is encountered with Kahl and never the Tennos, The mechs could had been removed and not much would change more than fighting bunch sentients with frame or Operator void damage, Heck they could even had free empy mech around like the Railjack Orphix mission, supposedly players without paracesis still got a temporary copy anyway.
This might be a stupid question but, in the new war trailer the opporator was surrounded by natah and the sentients so that has me thinking
Are we going to fight natah as a boss fight?
Idk, i personally hope she comes back to us. her children
It would be one huge missed opportunity if we dont.
If when Natah pops up during missions (as lotus would be) is signaling something, we may save her.
Currently this page is being used as a catalogue for The New War's "chapters". Once the actual quest comes out, how will this page be handled? Keep the catalogue and separate the quest info under "The New War (Quest)"?
The catalogue will have to be put in a separate page called Prelude to War, which takes place before The New War. This page could have the quest information and the page "Synopsis" could have all pieces of information, like teasers, trailers, dialogue, the catalogue chapters, events, and the quest itself, for the full story.
On December 15th, the Origin System will never be the same.
Ready your most powerful Loadouts. It's time to go to war.
Considering how much they hyped having to be ready for the War within only for it to be like level 40 or so, I dont think we need that strong of a loadout.
What quests will be needed to do the new war?
Awakening → Vor's Prize → Once Awake → The Archwing → Stolen Dreams → The New Strange → Natah → The Second Dream → The War Within → Chains of Harrow → Apostasy Prologue → The Sacrifice → Chimera Prologue → Erra → The Maker
Rising Tide for Railjack
Heart of Deimos for Necramech
Time to gear up. I believe people who try to avoid operator/archwing/railjack/necramech (or even k-drive) will fail this 'War' miserably.
Ahahah, no they won't, game is build around being dumb ass easy. What`s the point of dropping DLC and scare away 99% player base cause you don't have all those things, which are super easy to obtain to be honest. If you are sweaty mc neckbeard shitbucketeer mr31 - this doesn't mean casual players will have tough time there...also coop where in any team there`s one sweatty boy who insta kills everything.
Honestly, I feel like people with high Mr should just help new players. After all, everyone just wants to enjoy the game
Ask in the Region chat, or Question chat. 100% guarantee someone will help.
People in this community are generally pretty nice excluding some eidolon hunters. Not saying there aren't toxic players but its generally a lot better then something like LoL or CS:GO
Fight together, or lose everything.
Drama queen
As a long time tenno, the new war is like "primed soon". i prefer they take the time to finish it.
Prime your dissapointments
With Witch Queen releasing sometime next February, I'm expecting DE to make some statement about a release for NW before that time or, more realistically, to ride out the Destiny 2 content surge by a month or two and drop sometime in April 2022. Though that opens the gates for an even later release in 2022, which is big sad.
Yea, because they are scared of Destiny 2 XD. When many players are leaving and were leaving Destiny 2 for quite a long time.
Well, you can be proud of yourself
The New War, to keep it a grip, is probably gonna give you about the same amount of enjoyment as the 30th Anniversary will. That's why it's dropping a little bit later than the 30th anniversary, they're trying to draw people away from Destiny.
Wait, when does she send a message saying I AM DYING????
https://warframe.fandom.com/wiki/Operation:_Orphix_Venom/Quotes#Random_Transmissions
Oh thats it? im caught up now? rip
I predict that "New War" will release in chunks, kind of how the codex has it split right now, so they can release basically a 20 minute quest with a 19 minute cutscene called "New War: Prologue/Erra's potato pancake house" sometime this November, than at the end of it advertise after a fade to black "New War: The Last Lotus 2024".
I don’t think that’s gonna happen, new war was set to release in 2019, and I don’t think we are gonna have to wait 5 years after the reveal to see how this ends.
Scarlet spear and Orphix venom, and the 2 cutscene quests have already done the sections part you mentioned. They have already hyped it enough with the new playable characters, it will be disappointing if it’s just a cutscene after all of that.
Besides, DE has already stated that it’s coming out this year.
DE says a lot of things though, and seeing how they're spending time on making a mobile platform and have more priority on releasing lucrative cosmetics, I don't see New War releasing in any way complete or polished. WF has historically been a game about incremental updates, why would DE squander a slow burn of population by releasing full products, when they can maintain a higher player base and income by slowly pushing out content, especially in an environment where we already expect a trickle of steady content.
Can't wait for more bad writing, bad dialogue and """choices"" we can make but don't really mean anything. New War? More like New Snore.
I'm just gonna assume you have a better narrative at hand that can make the story much more enticing. Go on, share us your "Would be" story instead of the snoozefest that you claim "New War".
TBF, a rough draft of a poorly written "Would be" story is still better than one that never releases.
Poor DE, work so hard for some dude to crap all over their work 😞
They would not spend 4 years or more on a project for it to be poorly written, terribly done dialogue and boring story
"This is the second time ever in WARFRAME's history where players are able to play as non-Tenno characters and factions (the first being with the Golden Maw during The War Within)."
I don't really see any similarities... the Golden Maw was controlled via Transference. You could call that a "well-established concept". Pretty sure what we saw at TennoCon '21 wasn't based on Transference at all.
Hm... technically a Warframe isn't a Tenno character either. Same way as you point out for Necramechs. How about "This is the first time ever in WARFRAME's history where players are able to play as characters that are neither Tenno nor controlled by Tenno via Transference."?
Sorry, wasn't logged in. That comment a minute ago was me :)
Also, we need to be specific on how we use "Tenno" as it can refer to the faction or the actual operator. Maybe a better note would be "This is the first time ever in WARFRAME's history where players are able to play as another faction."
I think non Tenno is fine the WF and mechs are still controlled by Tenno up to this point in the game i cant think of a single time your PC that was awakened when Capt. Vor was coming to capture you
It's a little annoying that all we were told about the New War release is it's "coming in 2021" but not even given a month. For all we know it could be coming Dec 31st 2021. Would be nice to know the month at least.
I mean, we've been told this was coming once before already, and then it drifted off into the Void. I won't fully believe it's coming until it gets here.
Except last time it was just a trailer, Now we have a 30 minute gameplay demo and with covid restrictions lowering it will probably speed up the process
Im fairly certain that you know it is going to be released December 15th?
I know it sounds really stupid and doesn't make a lot of sense lore wise but it would be cool if they added the ability to play as enemy factions outside of the new war, maybe only on a specific mission though.
Maybe bring back clan pvp for Solar Rails but the attacking side gets to play as hoards of Grineer or Corpus?
I really wish we could have the pvp solar rails. That was one of the best things in war frame. I loved battling it out against other clans to own and hold dark space mission zones.
If nothing else i would like access to those huds as customization options
Imagine a corpus/grineer/infested/sentient suit that the operator can use or a warframe designed by one of those factions on our side
