Zaws are modular melee weapons created and assembled at Hok's Anvil in Cetus. Unlike traditional weapons, Zaws utilize a modular components system with interchangeable parts when crafting. Different parts grant different stats and abilities when used in crafting a Zaw, and players are able to mix and match different combinations of parts, resulting in a much wider variety of base stat customization for the weapons. Players are also free to give Zaws a name of their choice to further enhance customization.
Components[]
A Zaw consists of three different components, the Strike, the Grip, and the Link. Each component is centered around a particular aspect of the weapon, and these components can each have various parts to choose from, which changes the type of functionality that the component provides.
Strikes[]
Strikes are the head of the weapon, which determines the weapon's damage distribution, critical chance, critical damage and status; while also altering the final base speed of the Zaw. These are the components that earn Mastery Rank points for the weapon. It also determines what picture is shown in the arsenal. Each Strike can give two types of weapon depending on the Grip used (one-handed or two-handed). Weapon type determines the polarity of the Stance slot.

Grip[]
Grips refer to the weapon's handle, which will determine the weapon's base attack speed, overall base damage (damage distribution will retain the ratio from the Strike) and the type of weapon that will be built (one-handed or two-handed).
Grip | Type | Damage Bonus | Base Speed |
---|---|---|---|

Links[]
Links are the various weights and decorations attached to the hilt of the weapon's handle, which grant a variety of stat bonuses to the weapon with corresponding penalties.

The names of the Links are indicative of the stats they change, and the degree to which they change said stats.
- Ruhang links increase damage at the cost of attack speed.
- Jai Links increase attack speed at the cost of damage.
- Vargeet increases critical chance at the cost of status chance.
- Ekwana increases status chance at the cost of critical chance.
The premade combinations of Link types determine the bonus and penalties they provide.
- Example: The Vargeet Ruhang combines the Vargeet and Ruhang links, leading to an increase in damage and critical chance at the cost of attack speed and status chance.
Numbers in the name indicate how many of a particular link is present, showing an increase in that Link's particular stat. The number will appear after the name of the link it refers to.
- Example: The Vargeet II Ruhang has 2 Vargeet links, meaning that it offers greater critical chance bonus for a greater status chance penalty. On the other hand, the Vargeet Ruhang II has 2 Ruhang links, meaning it offers greater damage bonus for a greater speed penalty.
Crafting[]
Forging[]

The Zaw Forging screen at Hok's Anvil.
Before players can craft a Zaw, they must first purchase the blueprints for the parts they desire from Hok's Anvil, which is available for Standing, after which these parts must then be constructed at the Foundry.
Once the component parts have been crafted, players must return to Hok's Anvil and select the Forge a Zaw option. Here, players must choose the crafted components they have available to form the weapon. Once a Strike, Grip and Link are selected, the player will be shown a preview of the weapon's appearance, along with the weapon's stats. If the weapon is satisfactory, players can then proceed with the Build Weapon action, which will instantly craft the weapon for 4,000. Players can also use the Forge screen to preview builds of Zaw components they do not yet own.
A newly built Zaw cannot be renamed, customized, Polarized, equipped with a Focus Lens, have Exodia Arcanes installed, or earn Mastery Rank experience. However, they can be equipped with an Orokin Catalyst.
Once built, a Zaw cannot be disasssembled to return its components parts.
Zaw Combos[]
While any Strike can be combined with any Grip, the type of weapon that results is dependent upon the exact type of parts that are used, and certain weapon types are limited to certain combinations of parts. Links do not affect the weapon type created, and can be freely used on any Grip and Strike combination.

Gilding[]

A freshly-built Zaw (above), and a Gilded Zaw (below).
In order to fully unlock all of a Zaw's features, players must gild their weapon. To gild a weapon, players must have a reputation rank of at least Trusted with the Ostrons, and the desired Zaw must first be leveled up to Rank 30. Afterwards, players must return to Hok's Anvil and select the Gild option under Other services, which will cost 2 Cetus Wisps and
5,000. Upon gilding the weapon, players will be asked to first add a Polarity to the weapon, and then finally give it a custom name. This process will reset the weapon's level back to Rank 0.
A Gilded Zaw will have all of the functionality available to other weapons. A Zaw will only give Mastery Rank points once gilded.
Visually, the Gilded Zaw will have a modified appearance over a newly-built one, namely having all rust traces removed, the Strike being smoother and glossier, the orange Links becoming gold, and finally the blade having Ostron characters written on it.
Exodia Arcanes[]

Gilded Zaws can be further improved through the installation of Exodia Arcanes, that grant special conditional abilities to the Zaw. These can be bought from Hok's Anvil once a player has achieved the rank of Kin with the Ostrons.
Installing an Exodia Arcane onto a Zaw will visually add energy lights on the weapon's Links. It will also prepend the "Arcane" prefix to the weapon's name on the Arsenal, though the weapon's name will not have the prefix during missions.
Final Stats[]
Final stat values are calculated by adding values of the Strike, Grip, and Link.
For Two-Handed Zaws, the Damage value is further multiplied by a factor, listed in the table below, depending on the Strike.
Type 2H | Strike | Damage factor |

Notes[]
- Links are not always called links in the item description texts; they may be called "counterweights."
- As of Update 26.1 (2019-11-22), Zaws are compatible with any Deluxe Skins.
- Hok also sells fully assembled Gilded Zaws on his Today's Special option for
. The Strike, Grip and Link combinations on these weapons are randomized daily.
- Zaws have to be gilded to earn Mastery Rank points, with their progression tied to the weapon's Strike alone. For example, if a player levels up a Gilded Zaw crafted with the Balla Strike to 30, any future Zaws forged using the Balla Strike will no longer provide Mastery regardless of what combination of Grips and Links they have.
- As there are eleven Strikes currently available, the maximum amount of Mastery Rank points that can be earned from Zaw crafting is 33,000.
- With 11 Strikes, 10 Grips, and 16 Links, there are currently a total of 1760 possible Zaw combinations available.
- Rank 30 Zaws or Gilded Zaws can be donated to Hok's Anvil in exchange for Ostron Standing.
- Zaws can equip Riven Mods, with the Riven Mods generated tied to the weapon's Strike, e.g. Balla Exi-Gelitis.
- Custom names for Zaws have a 24 character limit including spaces, and will not accept special characters like commas (,) or apostrophes ('), though hyphens ( - ) are accepted.
- Names can also not include any profanities such as swear words.
- Applying Exodia Arcanes to Zaws will give their Links a visual change. Most Exodias will add a small glowing gem to the Links, while the Infested Exodia Epidemic and Exodia Contagion will make the Link visibly corrupted by the Infestation. This however is a purely cosmetic change.
- Zaws inherit basic colours after gilding from the grip, though this change can only be seen with plague grips.
- Typing [Zaw] in the in-game chat and selecting the Zaw will let other players in the same chat channel see its bonuses.
- Zaws cannot be used in Conclave.
- Changing Holster Style will have no affect on certain Zaws, such as the Oothla and Seekalla
Bugs[]
- If a newly Gilded weapon is equipped while on Cetus, the polarity slot added to the weapon during gilding will not appear. The polarity slot will appear once the player returns to their Orbiter.
- On the first in-game day of applying a Lens to the new Plague Strikes, the Lens will not drop convergence orbs or gain Tenno Way experience. This appears to fix itself at Daily Reset. (100,000 Daily Standing not spent on day tested.)
- Hok's Daily Special might contain unreleased Zaw parts.
- The gems added to links by Exodia Arcanes unfortunately do not take on the energy or emissive colors, but are oddly tinted by the accent color.

Patch History[]
Update 36.0 (2024-06-18)
- Fixed modular weapons in their respective screens (Zaws) being highlighted with the Ally Highlights setting enabled.
Update 35.5 (2024-03-27)
- Fixed the blade of a Zaw Melee (specifically with the Sepfahn Strike and the Undercutter Skin equipped) clipping out of the sheath and not staying in the sheath when moving forward.
Update 35.1 (2024-02-20)
- Fixed Mod Slots overlapping in the Zaw Gild screen if the Tennokai Segment isn’t installed.
Update 33.6 (2023-07-27)
- Modular Components that can earn Mastery will now show if that component is Mastered when viewed in a Vendor Menu (ex: viewing Zaw Strikes at Hok).
Update 32.0 (2022-09-07)
- GILDING CHANGES
As mentioned on Devstream #163, we have made changes to the Gilding system to make it easier to access the full power of your Modular items earlier on in-game. For those players that have just completed the Second Dream and are looking to craft a more powerful Amp to help you into and beyond The New War - these changes are for you!
Instead of upon Gilding, modular weapons will now have their full stats available upon ranking up to Level 30. Gilding your Modular weapon now serves the purpose of allowing it to earn Mastery and unlock customization. This allows players to have access to more powerful gear without needing to fully level and earn Standing for the respective Syndicates!
Update 30.5 (2021-07-06)
- Players can now install an Orokin Catalyst onto ungilded Modular items
- Being unable to install a Reactor or Catalyst onto an ungilded modular item significantly slowed down progression on new Modular items. Players who were willing to make the investment into Modular items weren’t able to Mod them to their full capacity, which left their new gear feeling very underpowered. So we have removed that restriction!
Update 30.3 (2021-05-25)
- Fixed multiple issues with the Nikana Zaw (Sepfahn Strike):
- Fixed sheath disappearing after attacking for the first time in a mission.
- Fixed the sheath sharing it's colour channels with the blade instead of being coloured in attachments.
- Fixed the sheath not showing in Captura.
- Fixed issue when using Sepfahn strike without a skin (rotating on every holster/unholster), was previously fixed only with skin applied.
Update 29.5 (2020-11-19)
- Fixed any holster alterations for a two-Handed Zaw in the Arsenal not being correctly applied when you leave, and reverting back to the default standard holster type.
Update 29.0 (2020-08-25)
- Fixed script error resulting in loss of functionality when attempting to rename a Zaw.
Hotfix 28.3.2 (2020-08-12)
- Fixed a script error resulting in a loss of functionality when attempting to rename a Zaw.
Update 28.3 (2020-08-12)
- Fixed some two-handed Melee weapons (i.e. Hammer Zaw (Rabvee), Heavy Blade Zaw (Dokrahm)) sticking to your hand no matter what you’re doing.
Hotfix 27.4.4 (2020-05-07)
- Fixed for Zaw's using weapon Skins covering the Warframe with the weapon's Elemental FX. As reported here: https://forums.warframe.com/topic/1190562-tiatnia-zaw-skin-color/
Update 27.4 (2020-05-01)
- Fixed clicking on chat-linked Zaws overlapping UI screens that are already open with the Zaw inventory select screen.
- Fixed equipping a TennoGen Skin onto a polearm Zaw removing the Sugatra placements at both ends of the polearm.
- Fixed incorrect Melee sounds playing when using a Gilded Polearm Zaw with a Skin.
- Fixed Zaws remaining in your Warframe’s hands when switching Arsenal views to your Primary/Secondary.
- Fixed custom holstered locations for Zaw Staves defaulting after exiting the Arsenal.
Hotfix 26.1.3 (2019-11-26)
- Added Lifted status to Ooltha Heavy Slam radial attack when used with a one handed Zaw.
- Added Lifted status to Rabvee Heavy Slam radial attack when used with a two handed Zaw.
Update 26.1 (2019-11-22)
- We now allow the use of Skins on Zaws - this 2 year old request is finally seeing the light of day after some under-the-hood restructuring. If you come across any issues with Exodia, or odd behaviours, please let us know! Skin compatibility is automatically determined by Strike!
Hotfix 26.0.3 (2019-11-01)

Now that we have returned to Cetus and the Plains of Eidolon with a remaster, we are applying some 'Economy Remaster' changes to go with the changes in an effort to apply our continued learnings. Change is the name of the game - thank you for all feedback on our economies and for being receptive to change!

Wish DE would hook us up with more Zaw options, like Dual Swords / Daggers, Tonfas (like Praedos, Kronen etc), Gunblades. or even like modular weapons that have dual orientations similar to the Split Dark Sword that can do two stance mods and melee styles.
Wtf happened to zaw, i was unable to use after the stupid update
2 suggestions: 1) After Operation: Plague Star there should be an event centered around a different element, perhaps Fire with Heat based Handles and Strikes. 2) A new Zaw Strike that's basically an axe head which can be used for Machetes and Heavy Blades, perhaps an elemental variant can be included in the next event?
P.S.- 3rd suggestion: New Strikes and maybe new Handles and customization options to encompass the remaining Melee Weapon Types, such as Two-Handed Nikana, Dual Swords, Dual Daggers, Nunchaku, Tonfa, etc.
Need Hok, Pedleg, and Vilcor to get together and get us some new Zaws, or at least update what we currently have.
From my experience with Zaws, the best way to build them is not for damage, but for auxiliary stuff like attack speed/crit/status. You can always increase damage with mods, but to compensate for a slow Zaw you would need to waste slots for speed mods, same for Zaws without crit or status.
I build the fastest Balla type Zaw with status chance on the side, and filled it with damage and status mods. It has pitiful reach, so I compensated with the Reach mod. Slap on an Exodia Force and you've got a melee shredder with extreme status chance, a radial blast, good reach and good speed right out of the gate, without the need to waste a slot for Berserker Fury.
So instead of compensating for slow speed you instead compensated for low reach. You're still using a mod slot to make up for a weakness in the weapon.
Whats a good 1st zaw if I wanted to craft one?
None
Lol k
Typo in the bugs section, "unfortunally" instead of "unfortunately"
LmA0
Only Cyath has a 2.6 range stat for machetes. The other two machete zaws (Rabvee and Kronsh) have 2.4, at least when previewed at Hok's Anvil.
I mention this to report the inaccurate numbers listed on this page, but I'd also like to mention that got dang it's just another reason machete Kronsh and Rabvee are inexplicably, objectively worse than Cyath. Why? It's balanced by the riven dispos now, but I don't see why they were made so unequal in the first place.
How come the kitguns have two locations yet zaws can only come from Cetus?
Both Father and Zuud sell kitgun parts, so both can craft kitguns. Hok is the only one with permanent zaw stock, thus only cetus can craft them.
What MR do I need to craft a Zaw?

Thanks!
Can they look a little less...ugly?
Yes
When you guild them, the patterns on the items look less like junk, and you can recolor them.
Use skins
Are Zaw mastery not supposed to update on profile for a while after ranking it up (after gilding of course) ?
Sounds like a bug.
Yep, maxed a Zaw i didn't max before. Profile didn't update kek.
Last time made all the Zaws with the same parts and named all of them Zaw, this time different parts and random name.
Sent ticket to DE
Did you gild it
Me: *wanted to make a long scythe but ended up with a heavy blade*
Me: *facepalms and screams inside*
I mean, berserker is multiplicative with other attack speed mods so why not both?
Because arcane Fury is 60%, don't use a mod, and is additive to primed fury.
So if you want "both", it is Berzerk and arcane Fury.
K but I'm going to use it until i get that's arcane or not but I'm wondering if you can use both
You can use arcane Strike + primed Fury, they are additive.
And the best way to have the arcane Strike is to buy it (~100pl at rank max actually).
(and it is very stupide, the arcan Fury is for damage, when the mod Fury is for attack speed... all this time, i was speaking about arcane Strike and saying arcane Fury...)
I haven't noticed a list of ranges anywhere, so here's one. But all a person really needs to know is that scythe range is bad.
Daggers: 1.7
Scythes: 1.7
Nikanas: 2.5
Rapiers: 2.5
Swords: 2.5
Machetes: 2.6
Hammers: 3.0
Heavy Blades: 3.0
Polearms: 3.0
Staves: 3.0
Dagger suck. what a waste of a grind...
Added, thanks.
Dagger zaw is my favorite weapon, with 40% playtime.
https://overframe.gg/build/20809/
Wow im geting a long and small bladed zaw so i can turn grinner into rice
Zaws seem great, and I have a Mewan riven, but they seem like they'd take so much extra effort to get and I don't like Cetus
bleh
Do it. zaws can be the best thing u have. u should grind 4 one. its legit mix and match. just do it and thank me later. just do it. unless u want a galatine modded 4 atk spd make a zaw. u can even name them. i hated the grind, but in exchange i got the best thing that happened 2 me: Solar Eclipso (my renamed zaw)
Yeah I've had 4 now.
Wait, no I've had 5. two Plague Kripaths, one Plague Keewar, a Sepfahn, and a Mewan.
I know i am very fcking late, but what zaw builds did you guys use?
An update: everyone is doing Cetus Bounties for the Aya drops during the Prime Resurgence event going through January, great time to rank up Ostron standing and get your Zaws.
Zaws seem to have a chance to proc Blast on slams and heavy slams.
Is that documented anywhere?
Don't think so. Do all strikes have this behavior?
Tested Mewan Sword, Sepfahn Nikana, Balla Dagger, Plague Keewar Scythe and Cyath Machete, all did Blast for their Radial Damage, both Heavy and Normal slam. (They do still proc impact on normal slam)
Also found out that for some reason, Cyath Machete seems to have falloff on Heavy Slam. I wonder how many weapons randomly have falloff? Machete Wraith didn't have falloff, so it is not weapon categories.
Neither did any of the other Zaws, just the Cyath Machete
GG DE
Edit: Also looks like that Heavy Slam Radial damage deals Blast on weapons that deal Impact on the normal Radial Slam.
When did that start happening? I remember doing heavy slams to get Impact procs on Impact slam weapons to confirm that they can indeed still proc Impact.
He's right. same. when i made my rapier Zaw, when i would do a slam, i did blast even tho my element is Viral. Test it out. weird. it does 1255 dmg on normal atk and 6k on heavy. 800 viral.
Practically all heavy slam attacks deal a blast proc
Community: Noooo, you can't just stealth nerf an exodia that's been popular and working this way for 3 years and pretend it was a bug/unintended-feature!
DE: Haha, community trust go brrrrr
Seriously though, the amount of times I'm starting to hear the phrase "unintended feature" from this company instead of nerf is getting on my nerves
Thing is, it wasn't popular at all until Scarlet Spear hit, where suddenly everyone and their mother started getting it after seeing how effective it was. So it is very much possible that DE was not aware of the calculation being busted until the usage statistics were flooded with it
"it wasn't popular at all until Scarlet Spear hit"
'it wasn't popular at all until they remoove self-damage.
But they should know what is in their game... It is them who code it...
and "Projectile does not inherit base critical chance and critical damage stats from equipped Zaw" : it seams to me that was a normal and intended behaviour.
it copy the damage, so why would it not also copy the crite chance and damage ?
Dude have you even tried coding "they should know what is in their game, it is them who code it" bruh learn c or rust and tell me how easy it is to make something that works with no exploits or mistakes
He doesn't need to learn c. c++ or python will do.
WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED WITH MY SCREEN WHEN GOING BACK TO THE ORBITER WHEN I MADE MY FIRST ZAW IM REALLY CONFUSED
Wrong site dude
Probably the encoded message thing. it's very common tbh, not at all related to zaw. A bit late, but hope this helps. It's from like sacrifice or something
If DE were to expand upon Zaws, they could allow us to combine two identical zaws so we may dual wield them. Ofc, due to the investment of resources for 2 zaws, they should have stronger stats. Also, this would only work with one-handed zaws, because you can't really expect to dual wield polearms.
Also new strikes for two-handed nikanas and whips.
As for some other melee types like glaives, claws, warfans, fists and sword/shields, maybe Duviri Paradox will have a vendor for such weapons.
Very cool ideas
What is the cost of gilding a zaw? 3K standings? Can someone add that to the wiki please?
Thanks
It's already on the page, 5000 standing and 2 Cetus Wisps.
I still can't find it using Ctrl+F... and I'm too lazy to read the whole post lmao
Well of course I won't be able to find it that way.. you need to switch to "Crafting" tab
Thanks tho
