PGS vs SRT subtitles. What's the difference?
Good morning guys and girls!
I am curious, what is the difference between PGS and SRT type subtitles? I just noticed that most of my movies have the PGS and I can select from my phone. On my nvidia shield though, it does not show me the PGS, only the srt version I manually added.
Thanks! Alligatorterror
SRT is text (a TXT file with timing and the lines of text inside), and you can modify it easily even with WordPad. Size of an SRT file is very small. PGS is based on images and it usually have a lot of styles, colors and so on (especially for karaokes in Disney movies or things like that), but it can not be modified easily. Size is much bigger than SRT.
Gotcha! Thank ye!
But how are the PGS generated during the bluray creation process? Thx

Gotcha thanks!
I have a question about these in general. If you're watching a film in English without the sub files, and someone on-screen speaks a foreign language, will you still get subs for that? I always presumed that was hard coded.
Sorry to hijack. Seemed a bit silly starting a thread for it.
Those subs for foreign language parts can be hard-coded, but it is usually not. In most modern movie containers, it is possible to set a "Forced" flag that will display subtitles for the foreign language parts if you are playing without full subtitles.
Thank you all for answering!
