If you're running high enough equilibrium shards/mod, Synth Deconstruct has a 25% chance to drop a health orb on assists, which is 50 energy per 4 assists on average, so over double the energy yield of this mod. You can use them at the same time, though.
If you can spare using Archon Stretch and will get anywhere near the enemies (like in a melee build), Diriga's arc coil can activate that +2 energy/sec at almost all times.
I think that's a better setup purely for energy than using Energy Generator, but if you want to focus specifically on ranged-based assists from your sentinel, and/or don't want to use Archon Stretch, it's your best option. There may be other abilities that can apply electricity on a sentinel that I'm not aware of, though

Energy Generator cannot be trade. Unique copies of abilities cannot be traded.
It is present and traded on the warframe market.

Does the explosion from Self Destruct or the slow from Coolant Leak count as assists for this mod?
I would assume so, considering how good the game is at counting other obscure things as sentinel assists (as seen below, gas procs, some abilities that absorb its damage, etc). However, Self Destruct and Coolant Leak are both garbage mods. Self Destruct relies on the death of your sentinel, which is way too much of a pain to build around, and isn't even a particularly good explosion. And Coolant Leak only affects one target at a time within a tiny range. Such a target would almost definitely already be what your sentinel is shooting at, meaning it's redundant at best and counterproductive at worst.
Apparently if it shoots Mag/Prime's bubble, all enemies who die after getting a hit from the DoT counts as an assist. Thus effectively giving Mag an infinite amount of energy in crowded missions. I use Deth Machine Rifle if anyone's wondering, without punch through mods.

Helstrum is an unstoppable assisting machine for this. With just (Primed) Firestorm, Malignant Force, Continuous Misery, Rifle Aptitude, Split chamber, and the 3 rifle fire rate mods (no Shred, punch-through cripples it), it will rapidly apply 10 Gas procs to every enemy (that stays) within its radial damage range, and each of THEM will then damage every enemy within THEIR stacked gas range! Absolutely carries any energy-starved ability channeling build, guaranteed!

Hellstrum the best weapon for this?
If you build it to be (and can resist the urge to make it a heat/corrosive spreader instead), I believe it is. Sweeper Prime is also excellent and benefits from being hitscan and working with punch through, but sentinels don't change targets as often as you might think, so having wide AoE helps a lot in that regard. If I had to define a cutoff point where I think Helstrum is better than Sweeper Prime, it'd be once you have lots of enemies around you most of the time. With sparse enemies, Sweeper is probably more consistent since it has no travel time. But if enemies are surviving your presence and gathering in meaningful numbers, Helstrum takes the cake. So basically use any other weapon early game and Helstrum late game.
Helstrum with Gas is definitely the best option in my opinion. Very reliable.
I honestly don't even use it with gas anymore. The temptation of heat/corrosive procs was too strong. And it's STILL excellent for Energy Generator. Primed Firestorm is the real important factor here.
If your build has Arcane Energyze + Primed Flow and can keep enemies away or provide shield and protection to deth cube(Saryn, Protea, Wisp...) this augment/sentinel is good.
Hellstrum:
Greater area of effect than 4.98 with Primed Firestorm;
On average Five "guided shot" increased by Split Chamber and Vigilant Armaments;
Shots go through walls if you equip Primed Shred;
Shots are more fast if you equip Terminal Velocity;
Three 60/60 mods to control small crowds "Gas + Cold" or "Viral + Heat" or "Radiation + Cold"
Swepper and Deth Machine Rifle:
Hitscan shot is instant to mark targets;
Less acuracy of Heavy Caliber + Ville Acceleration will increase the chances of hitting multiple targets from the crowd;
For utilities the best combination is "Corrosive + Heat" or "Radiation" to make enemies busy.
Primed Shred punch through also works well.
I initially got this to help keep Sevagoth's Gloom up and running. Although it's been changed to be very sustainable now I still really enjoy Dethcube generating energy. Definitely recommend giving this a try if you like using plenty of abilities.
With the Status changes,
Blast is now completely useless for getting AoE assists. Instead, use
Electricity or
Gas for a similar 3-meter AoE effect.
In particular,
Gas is incredibly effective at getting assists. >100% Status can get multiple Gas procs on one target, increasing the AoE and netting more assists when the affected target walks around.
Continuous Misery makes the Gas clouds last a whopping 12 seconds, effectively making your Sentinel a pocket
Torid. Even better, Gas clouds don't dissipate on target death, so killing a Gassed target in a chokepoint will affect all the enemies that run through it.
not worth it
Have Deth Cube use the Cryotra weapon from Fortuna. Mod the Cryotra for Blast damage only and 100% status (doable with just Vigilante Ferver, Speed Trigger and Thermite Rounds), add Synth Fiber and Deconstruct. Put Equilibrium on your Warframe. If you have Arc Energize use it too.
Results: After Assisting in 10 Kills an energy orb pops out. Which happens more often since the blast damage proc hits all mobs in a 5 Meter AOE damaging all of them. Same goes for the 2 Synth mods. During a Kuva Survival I was getting about 1 hp globe every 2-3 seconds or more during heavy combat, and 1 energy globe at about the same rate.
More then enough energy for toggle powers like Embers WoF, Wukongs Iron Staff, Excals Chomatic Blade... even Valk’s Hysteria lasted for 8 minutes straight with this.

not really cryotra ROF is very slow, you don't need status for this mod, i use deth rifle prime with a 35.00 ROF and 130 drum mag and 1.3 reload the gun spams so hard i got so many energy orbs on the floor during survival i can't use them up as fast as he drops them
FYI I'm nearly positive the energy regen from Rage is calculated from damage *before* resistances. So it's more beneficial to have on tankier frames. Not sure about its interaction with Adaptation but it's really good on Excal Umbra for an exalted blade build for this reason.
It's based on the damage you actually take, not the damage pre-mitigation.
Can other tenno loot the energy orb?
Yes.
This and Synth Deconstruct for starters. Throw in a Synth Fiber.
Nekros and Equilibrium maybe...
Don't forget Health Conversion.
This mod is incredible with Arcane Energize. Equip DethCube Machine Rifle with speed trigger and Stormbringer to start with and energy orbs will be constant - works best with AoE abilities
While some may nay-say it, even at rank 0 I think this has potential, especially for early-game energy management. Even without a weapon optimized for it, 10 assists isn't very many and it's remarkably affordably priced in capacity. I'm hopeful that some of the new moa weapons will be really good for this.
Mostly worthless unless you posess Arcane Energize (maxed, or two of them maxed).

Should be fantastic for energy generation if you do something like, say, a reduced accuracy Sweeper Prime with maximum punch through, fire rate, and reload speed on the DethCube. Maximum assists means tons of energy.
If gas clouds work, that may be another consideration
Maybe if we get Dethcude Prime this can get some use. As it stands right now Dethcude is way too squishy to actually use it outside of starchart.
Dethcube Wraith, probably, because it has that skin to make it look like the G3's Sentinel. Makes it seem like a Grineer sentinel.. or Dexcube a for the next warframe anniversary lol
