Kavat Genetic Codes are a resource required for the incubation of a Kavat in the Orbiter's Incubator.
Acquisition[]
Kavat Genetic Codes can be earned when scanning alive Feral Kavats at a 25.0% chance (while their corpses may be scanned too for Simaris standing - yet this will not award any codes). Alternatively, one can be bought for
5 each in the Market or with the Kavat Starter Kit for
95. Bought separately, you will require
50 to purchase the 10 required to start the incubation process.
Vasca Kavats on the Plains of Eidolon do not give Kavat Genetic Codes when scanned.

Gathering Tips[]
These are based on opinions and may not be 100% true. These should be viewed as advice for finding the enemies until better facts are proven.
| Target | Planet | Name | Type | Level | Tile Set |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deimos | Horend | Capture | 12 - 14 | Orokin Derelict | |
| Deimos | Phlegyas | Exterminate | 13 - 15 | Orokin Derelict | |
| Deimos | Formido | Sabotage | 14 - 16 | Orokin Derelict |
- Buying these off the Market is the easiest option if you aren't wanting to put the time and effort into learning how to farm codes quickly. Obtaining Prime parts or Riven Mods and trading them for Platinum can be faster than farming Genetic Codes directly if you are unfamiliar with code hunting.
- Consider farming in a group. The number of kavats that spawn in any given pack is group size +1, so if you go solo there will be 2 kavats in a group, two players will get 3, three players will get 4, and 4 players will get 5. Multiple packs do spawn per mission.
- Phlegyas (Exterminate) and Horend (Capture) nodes on Deimos have a number of Feral Kavats that spawn in the missions. These are the favored nodes for high-volume breeders because they can be run quickly.
- Steel Path missions have +100% Resource Drop Rate.
- During the second portion of the Sands of Inaros quest up to 50 Feral Kavats will spawn depending on the player group size.
- Terrorem (Survival) node on Deimos has a number of Feral Kavat that spawn alongside infested enemies for the first 10 minutes of the mission. This is a very slow method compared to exterminate and capture.
- There's also a good chance for a group of Kavats to spawn in the starting room, so one possible strategy is to abort and restart the mission if you don't see any Kavats there or don't get any Genetic Codes from them.
- Alternatively, wait at spawn for 5 mins until the mission starts automatically, 2 trios will spawn in this time (1 trio every 2m 30s). Kavats continue to spawn throughout the mission but it is advised to extract when available.
- You may want to kill the Kavats after they have been scanned to avoid confusion. This is not necessary as Kavats still spawn either way.
- Consider using the Synthesis Scanner rather than the Codex Scanner, as you can upgrade the Synthesis Scanner with the Vector-Thread and Cross-Matrix widgets to respectively scan faster or get a chance of gaining an additional genetic code from a successful scan.
- Certain Warframe abilities that are capable of immobilizing or incapacitating both the Feral Kavats and enemies they may be fighting may make this easier, by both protecting the Kavats from damage and making it easier to scan them:
Limbo's
Stasis can stop Kavats from moving altogether. With a high enough Ability Range,
Cataclysm can cover the entire room making finding and scanning Kavat much easier.
Rift Surge also marks affected enemies with the caster's energy color, making cloaked Kavats easier to spot.- With a high enough Ability Range and reasonable Ability Duration,
Vauban's
Bastille (along with the
Repelling Bastille Augment) and
Rhino's
Rhino Stomp are some of the best choices for locking down entire rooms to safely acquire Genetic Codes. Be wary of their high energy costs, however, and plan accordingly.
Ivara's
Sleep Arrows,
Baruuk's
Lull &
Equinox's
Rest allow you to incapacitate both Feral Kavats and surrounding enemies. Both abilities also mark affected enemies with the caster's energy color (though this is more noticeable with Rest), making cloaked Kavats easier to spot.
Inaros'
Desiccation can be used to incapacitate groups of Feral Kavats and other enemies. However, it only blinds units that are facing you, and its damage over time may be enough to finish off weakened Kavats.- With enough Ability Duration,
Nidus'
Parasitic Link can be used to lock down one Kavat without fear of it running off or taking too much damage. Be wary of taking damage while linked, however, as the damage is transferred to the Kavat and can kill it if its health is low enough.
Titania's
Spellbind and
Lantern can be used to immobilize Feral Kavats and also enemies, in the case of Spellbind, aiding in easy scans. Be wary of killing the Kavat however, upon deactivation of Lantern once its cast. Some users report this ability preventing the drops, with the targets no longer turning blue when scanned, so use with caution.
Nezha's
Divine Spears is an easy way to immobilize Feral Kavats leaving them an easy target for scanning. building minimal power strength is best to prevent the spears from killing them right away.
Harrow's
Condemn can be used to immobilize Feral Kavats and enemies.
Excalibur's
Radial Blind can also be used to immobilize Feral Kavats and enemies.
Trinity's
Well of Life is a good choice for immobilizing weakened Feral Kavats as it will also buff their health. It can, however, only hold one Feral Kavat per Trinity at a time.
Gara's
Mass Vitrify can crystallize all Kavats in its area making them easy to scan.
Garuda's
Blood Altar can immobilize a single Kavat long enough for scanning.
Nova's
Molecular Prime can slow the whole room. Be quick though as enough damage from fighting between enemies may kill them.- Also dont forget Revenants mesmer skins that immobilize enemies when they hit you with minimal damage, depending on duration
- Some Abilities might throw the Kavat's in a ragdoll status, where the scans don't work like intended. Resulting in a significant decrease in drop rate. Abilities include:
Khora's
Strangledome
Garuda's
Blood Altar
Nezha's
Divine Spears
Nidus's
Larva
Titania's
Spellbind and
Lantern
Vauban's
Bastille
Notes[]
- Resource Booster and Resource Drop Chance Booster do increase the number of codes obtained from a scan.
- Feral Kavats do not appear on the mini-map while they are cloaked and become invisible.
- This renders
Enemy Radar or similar mods to be less effective at spotting them. - However, looking through Scanners can highlight them, even through walls and while they are invisible.
- This renders
- Remove either weapons or attack Precepts from Sentinels or MOA (Companion), as they will attack Kavats indiscriminately, possibly killing them before they can be scanned. For this reason, be wary of bringing along Pet Kubrows or Kavats as they will not stand down and continue attacking Feral Kavats.
- Pet Kavats with Territorial Aggression pacify all wild animals in a given area, Feral Kavats included. However, be advised that this will not prevent Feral Kavats from entering combat with other enemies.
- Because boosters affect Kavat Codes, Smeeta Kavats that prioritize Charm are a viable option in Code farming. However, they should be modded to deal as little damage as possible as to not kill Feral Kavats too quickly.
- The
Heliocor and its variant
Synoid Heliocor can easily collect Kavat Genetic Codes with its Codex scanning mechanic when soloing, though bear in mind that only the killing player will collect the codes, and also this method will not take into account the Cross-Matrix Widget if you have it installed. Furthermore, this method will only work if the Feral Kavat's Codex entry has not been fully researched. The Heliocor will visually scan Feral Kavats upon kill but will not actually provide Genetic Codes. - Helios'
Investigator and
Atlas'
Ore Gaze can be used to acquire Genetic Codes, but only if the Feral Kavat's Codex entry has not been fully researched. - Using
Ballistica Prime's passive to create ghosts is useful, as each ghost can be scanned like a normal kavat, and can take advantage of the Cross-Matrix widget, giving a second chance to get Kavat Genetic Codes from the same feral Kavat.
- Ghosts made from unalerted Kavats are sometimes completely invisible, but still scannable in this state if you can find them.

So some quick TL:DR.
If you are running Survival, in the beginning room w/ hack terminal. You may hear cat sounds. If so, you need to bring out your scanner to survey the area.. Kavats are invisible. noted in the wiki but when intaking a bunch of info gets overlooked.
Dante would only work if you have never acquired scans, however afterwards, he will not scan them. Similarly, the same applies to Helios with Investigator. Running both could be beneficial if you just want to cover your bases or think you might have missed something. Check your Codex > Universe > Factions
Scanning also doesn't give a guaranteed kavat genetic code. So requires numerous mission runs and scans.
In conclusion, this can be a very tedious process which seems to be by design to basically persuade you to spend platinum (either buying the codes, starter kit, or resource booster). I know my first time I just bought the starter kit.
Can confirm, Steel path is the way to go on this. The enemies do basically 0 damage to eachother, so as long as you bring a stealth frame, you're not in danger of killing the Kavats.
I've been running Horend (Capture) and with a lucky Login drop doubler, I've been getting 2-4 reliably every run, once I got 6.
Also maybe it's just me, but it really seemed like they prefer hanging around in the larger rooms.
Got really lucky and got 6 in one mission, no boosters running max duration and range loki with radial blind subsume. Just be careful not to get toxin procced by the ospreys. It'll one shot you without any survivability.
Pain
Terrorem Survival go in with ivara. Check starting room. Kill with Ballistica Prime if you can for double scan. I went in 3 times (1 time I reset because no spawn) and took 10 code samples with me with a booster, so without that would still be 5 of them with an effort of ~15 minutes. Of course running any other mission here is fine as well, but being able to start of with multiple scans basically before the mission start is a nice bonus. I'd say spawn rate is about 50/50 for the starting room and especially if you have the Ballistica Prime you basically start off with 4 scans.
Supposedly you can get codes from Dante's passive scan with Noctua. Yet to confirm this. I'm either pretty unlucky after ~10 kills or you can't. Also, speaking of Dante, he seems to rock for solo 4 key runs in the derelict. It seems overguard prevents the move speed decrease (while also making the low shield/health penalties not matter). Noctua/ability damage is plenty as well
Orginal comment poster. Just got genetic code, so dante is a decent choice it appears
How to scan these? For me it doesnt work. I already scanned them in the past and the game doesnt allow more scans.
You need the synthasis scanner, not the codex scanner
Both work. Doesn't matter if you use synthesis or codex scanner.
Steel path Horend is the way. I ran about 6 missions of normal Horend scanning 2-4 cats each run with Ivara and got 1 code total. Ran Horend on steel path and got 4 codes from 4 scans. YMMV.
I mean there is a lot of luck involved. The by far best way still seems to be to start the survival mission (Terroem) and check the starting room for kavat spawns. It is very easy to scan them here with ivara and get the bonus on invisible scan.
After this you can use the ballistica prime set (60 plat on market for the set if you dont have it) to kill them and have a clone spawn, which is invisible as well, given you basically 4 free scans before the mission even started. Usually within the 5 minutes of survival you can find 2-4 extra cats. its usually hard to effectively kill and double scan them with the ballistica prime because its a invested survival, but its definetely doable. Depending on my luck I usually leave with at least 4 scans here + if you dont get scans from the first 2 you can just reset the mission as well. Unless you are really unlucky and have to reset very often you should have loads of scans in no time.
Thought that would be easier to use Helios to scan cats, but it didnt work. Too sad.
Best way to farm these is to do inaros quest once you fulfill the first vessel and go back to the tomb you ll get attaked by a shit ton of kavat I got 14 genetic code just there.
Hi im newbie and i just finish this quest, how to get back on it?
Thank you, OP. Did this using Ivara's Prowl and squad energy restore, all the kitties were chill and easy to scan, killed each one as I went, avoiding frustration later.
Also, you can replay quests at the Codex in the Orbiter.
They forgot to mention equinox, personally he is more comfortable with the second ability
Steel Path 100% drop rate doesn't help a thing. 4 scans and got nothing. And is stupid, if they allow sentinel to scan plants why not allow kavat scans? In what advanced world can Tenno not able to config sentinel to scan for certain targets?
+100% Steel Path Resource Drop Chance bonus = 2x Resource Drop Chance so 25% * 2 = 50% Drop Chance for Kavat Generic Code. Basically a coin flip four times and you only get heads each time in your case.
I figured out why the drop rates for gene codes sometimes seem a lot lower than they should be. Certain crowd control abilities will stop scanned kavats from dropping gene samples while affected by the ability, and the Synoid Heliocor dramatically reduces the drop rate. These abilities incude:
Garuda's Blood Alter
Khora's Stangledome
Nezha's Divine Spears
Nidus's Larva
Titania's Spellbind and Lantern
And Vauban's Vortex
All of these abilities will put the kavat into a glitched ragdoll state where the ghost of the kavat that's supposed to highlight it when using a codex scanner will be stuck in an unmoving neutral standing pose. I scanned around 40 kavats that were in this state and none of them dropped a single gene sample. All of these tests were done with a 2x drop rate booster in steel path where every kavat not in the glitched ragdoll state dropped a gene sample. I tested all of the CC abilities under the Gathering Tips section of this page (except I don't have Baruuk) and always got a gene sample using the other abilities. By the end of my testing, I gained 108 gene samples.
I also did another test for the Synoid Heliocor since it felt like it's rate of getting gene samples felt way lower than it should be when I was using it during solo vault runs. I did runs with the drop rate booster outside of steel path, for a gene sample drop rate of 50%. It took 27 kavat kills with the S Heliocor before I got a gene sample, which matches up to my experience of using it to kill kavats during vault runs. My theory with the Heliocor is that it can only get gene samples under certain conditions since throughout my test I was trying to only kill one kavat with each hit, but the swing that got me a gene sample killed 2 kavats in one swing. I also noticed the codex ghost is glitched when killing kavats with the S Heliocor too. Normally, it follows the ragdoll of killed enemies, but for kavats it leaves a highlight of a kavat in the neutral standing pose stuck in place while the kavat flies away.
TLDR: Don't farm gene samples with a Heliocor or the abilities I listed, or you might believe you've been cursed with an unholy amount of bad luck.
actually i can confirm this is true, i just scanned 50 kavats while using titania spellbind and none of them gave a code
OP here,
Thanks for the info, Dragon and Titania user. I'm going to assume the commenter in between is able to get Kavat Codes as intended. It's nice to hear some people aren't being affected by the bug. I got a login drop chance booster and tested again, and I'm still unable to get gene codes from kavats affected by Divine Spears and Blood Altar. Now I'm wondering what percent of people are and aren't affected by the bug.
There's probably a factor that I didn't account for, so I tested out a few things different from my usual tests. My usual test is on solo Steel Path Horend (Capture) using a fully upgraded Synthesis Scanner with a login double drop chance booster. With the login chance booster, I tested using the Codex Scanner, in Phlegyas (Exterminate), with and without a Decaying Dragon Key, and a public game (as host) during different missions, as well as 14 scans without the login chance booster and was not able to get any Kavat Genetic Codes when using Divine Spears, but I learned that the kavats' scanner highlight works properly when using Codex Scanners.
I'm not sure what other factors might cause the bug and can't find a way to turn off the synthesis scanner upgrades. I'm playing on an old account that started around 2013, so there might be many random factors that could be causing the bug. I'm also playing through the standalone game launcher on PC.
If anyone has any information that might help figuring out what's causing the bug for some people, I'd love to hear it.
The bug is real and if you scan the Kavats while in Titania's flight mode you can for some reason get [Cat's Eye] as a mod drop which is only obtainable from breeding [Adarza Kavat]
I scanned kavats whilst in titania's flight form and it seems like you only get codes if you kill them whilst not in flight form, or at least the drop rate is incredibly badly skewed.
TL;DR just use Zephyr and aim glide around, or hang off a wall or something, trust in your Double-Scan widget and don't use abilities to hold Kavats in place and such.
^You can get Kavat codes in flight form* The drop rate is just as bad as normal, just don't bind Kavats with abilities.
Hey guys, I am just trying to get some of those to build Khora, here is what I do:
Horend, Deimos
Steel Path ON
Ressource Chance Booster ON
I use Nezha as his 4 is super convenient.
If I calculate that correctly, it should be a guaranteed drop. I am trying to get those codes since yesterday, and I cant get them to drop.
Am I doing something wrong? Is anyone else experiencing problems obtaining these codes? Did I find a bug?
Comments are highly appreciated! Thanks!
Oh and I scan them with synthesis scanner, cross-matrix widget installed
My calculations must have been wrong as I just got one. This means the combination of SP und Ressource Chance Booster does NOT grant 100% drop chance.
Drop chance Boost doesn't work like that. When steel path says +100% drop chance, it usually means the loot table is rolled again if it doesnt drop (i.e if it doesnt drop the first "roll", it gets another chance) same applies with resource chance booster.
Also it may be additive (so more like 75%)
The OP did encounter a bug. Some CC abilities will stop kavat genetic codes from dropping, including Nezha's Divine Spears. I spent 2 afternoons researching the glitch and posted my write-up in the above comment on January 28.
In my experience, steel path + double drop chance booster made every non-bugged kavat I scanned drop a gene code. I gained 108 gene codes throughout that test, and accounting for the cross-matrix widget's +45%, comes out to about 70 scanned kavats.
It doesn't drop 100% in steel path mission in Horend, Deimos. Keep it straight.
It doesn't say it does. it says steel path has a 100% resource drop rate boost, which means it'll be 50% since it's 25% base
Go into steel path to farm this on Horend (the Deimos Capture mission). I was able to get 10 in 4 runs solo, took less than 15 minutes. If you don't have this unlocked, use the Steel Path Incursions to get close and do a couple missions to unlock Horend,,,waay worth it for increased drop chance
Seems like ballistica prime's ghosts cannot be scanned anymore. Can anyone check as well?
It doesn't work for me as well
I did scan it's ghost and got a genetic code. The problem is most of the time the ghost went invisible which is frustrating.
You'll need a squad member to spot the invisible ghosts by walking on the ghosts. Apparently they're visible to others 100% of the time.
Why isn't there a section about using Ivara to steal genetic codes before you scan them, so in essence doubling the chance of getting them... or did I just missed it?
I haven't been able to use ivara's prowl to get another genetic code so far
Because genetic codes only drop from scan not as resources. You only get mods from Prowl from the kavats.
"25% drop chance" I haven't gotten a single one in the past 22 Kavat scans
Ope now its 28 kavat scans without a single genetic code
Finally got it after 31 scans
Weird. I came here to ask if something has changed, at least on Xbox. In the last few missions doing Deimos Capture for the Nightwave Dragon Key Vault Op (about 6-8 runs taking 3 keys, can't stand the hobbled one) I've gotten 6 codes. I used Nidus and the Synthesis Scanner with the Vector-Thread and Cross-Matrix widgets installed. Before that I usually got nothing so didn't really bother.
Edit: Corrected number. 1 mission I distinctly remember getting 3 in the results screen. 3 days prior I got 4 in one run.

Only alive Feral Kavats give imprints with Steelpath and Resource drop chance booster you get 100% chance
25% BS
